Jeremy Whitley and The Continuing Decline of IDW

Jeremy Whitley is no stranger to controversy. Be it Dragontown that was an allegory for racial tension in the US, Twilight "For the Right Reasons" Sparkle, Radiant Hope waifuing a redeemed Sombra, or even just his tendency to textwall, there is no shortage of drama whenever he releases a comic. However, a continuing saga on Twitter shows that we have entered a new era of obsession and it signals further the decline of IDW's MLP.

The story begins like so many stories do, at a drunk panel at BABSCon. Jeremy Whitley, already well known in the community for his tendencies towards heavy allegories in his stories, insisted that Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy should come out as a couple. When the fandom heard this around twelve hours later, obvious questions arose. When questions about the representation that already exists, Lyra and Bon Bon, was brought up, Whitley stated that it merely was not enough:

One of the later comment threads, Day 3

Whitley later commented that it wasn't specifically Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, but that merely any lesbian pairing would do. This launched Whitley off into a three-day-long and, as of writing, still continuing saga of him obsessing over the sexualities of the characters. Unhappy with the discussions that were being generated from these statements, he reblogged a Tumblr post of a person wishing physical violence on those who dared to question his views of sexuality in a children's cartoon.

Whitley, writer of the Eisner-nominated comic Princeless, was obviously upset. As a part of his Twitter statements, he made numerous claims about the sexualities of certain characters as well as implying several times that Shining Armor and Cadance's relationship was not loyal. That last comment is worthy of note because the existence of heterosexual relationships in the show is seen as a reason to include homosexual ones. On one hand he feels at ease to comment that a heterosexual relationship is proof that homosexual ones should be included, but on the other he denigrates it and seems unaware that much of the fandom doesn't like relationships period.

This writer would welcome inclusion of more diverse groups within Friendship is Magic. Arguments such as Jeremy Whitley presents for them however are incredibly fallacious and show a complete lack of ability to see a larger picture outside of his small group of supporters. Homosexual couples could be represented in FiM, and it would be nice. As long as Jeremy Whitley does not write them.

As for IDW and Jeremy Whitley's continued relationship with them, it sadly seems like he is on it for the long run. IDW is infamous within the fandom for rejecting fan critiques, and the sole source of direct contact with fans, IDW's forum, has been down for months at the time of writing. Given the tendency of IDW to protect its writers and artists at all costs regardless of their actions, emailing them will likely have little effect. That is not to discourage those who try, but to merely warn: after all,  IDW handles controversy about as well as their average MLP writer handles a character.

Nice going, Jeremy.

The Future of FimFlamFilosophy and the DawnSomeWhere Crew: An Interview

Now that I have your attention; here's an article.

So, for those of you who live under a rock, or even worse, run normie lives with normie responsibilities. BABScon was this past weekend. The Bay Area Brony Spectacular saw it's biggest year yet (or so we think, they never really got around to telling us a final attendee count), and all those big horsefamous names some of you autist care about were there! We totally ignored them and interviewed some far more interesting people. FimFlamFilosophy, Peterip and Norman Wrangle of the DawnSomeWhere crew.

FimFlamFilosophy is the creator of the Mentally Advanced Series, Rainbow Dash Presents, and more recently Gym of the Romantic Journey. He also holds voice acting and writing credits for all of his work.

Petirep is a full time artist who is probably most well known for his work animating Rainbow Dash Presents. Additionally, he works with the likes of Monstercat and various other musicians drawing up promo art for their various works.

Norman Wrangle might be a new name to some of you. He currently collaborates with Greg and helps with animating Gym of the Romantic Journey.

What follows is a transcript of some awful sounding audio, mostly because of some shitlords laughing in the background like special ed kids on free ice cream day.

HN: Could you guys let us know who you are?

Petirep: This is Ryan Petree, aka Petirep

Norman: This is Norman Wrangle

Greg: This is Greg, FimFlamFilosophy

From Left to Right: Petirep, Norman, some old dude who's in all the photos for this interview, and Greg.

HN: Alright! So, starting at the beginning. Greg, Peterip how did you guys meet? How did your paths cross?

Petirep: Well I met Greg through the Mentally Advanced Series. I was a big fan of his work and I just  did some fan art for that

Greg: On the internet!

Petirep: On the internet.

Greg: On the internet!

HN: And he just happened to message you and was like “Hey this was cool, wanna work on some other stuff?”

Petirep: “Hey this is good, wanna work on some other spin-off project that I have going” yeah, that's how it went. Yeah.

HN: What, that was 20...11?

Greg: Well-

Petirep: Well, that was 2011

Greg: Was it 11?

Petirep: 2011, yeah

HN: That was the same year you guys did work on Bubbles right?

Greg & Peterip: Yes, yeah

HN: What was the writing and animation process like for the early episodes?

Greg: Basically I would just sit down and write a script, and I would send it off to Peterip, and usually I would send him, I think voice acting? Like, piece meal more or less

Petirep: Yeah, he would send me the voice acting and based off the voice acting I would draw the stuff in the script; and it started off more as a children's picture book thing where it wasn't suppose to be animated.

HN: More like static images right?

Petirep: Yeah, it wasn't suppose to be fully animated, but over time it just became more and more animated to the point where it was just still frame animation, and actual animation

HN: Was that when, you guys woke up one day and discovered you had an audience?

Petirep: Well, that happened slowly over time. I think we got big when, uh...

Greg: “Biker gorilla.”

Petirep: When “Biker gorilla” came out.

Greg: Because we made that fuss about Equestria Daily and then everyone had to start spammin them to get that in and then suddenly because it was such a big deal and everyone had to see why we weren't allowed on Equestria Daily!

[laughter]

HN: So, uh [spills spaghetti] you guys saw you had an audience. You saw you had people watching these videos now, did that alter the process or put on an additional pressure?

Petirep: Well...no, no it was still the same process we were just like “Let's keep making them better   like we have been”

HN: A staple of RBDP was a lot of the music and songs that came along with it. Was there any specific song you were proud of or you didn't feel it got enough attention?

Greg: Well I dunno; for “Haunting Nightmare” that song, a lot of people like that apparently, but I always felt like it lacked something. I could never figure out what exactly it lacked.

Petirep: “Bones and Skin”?

Greg: Yeah, the “Bones and Skin.” I don't know, I never really was very fond of it, but other people   are! So that's good, and a lot of people tell me they really like the Bittersweet “Sinking Ships” song.

HN: Yes! That was a good one

Greg: [chuckles] Yeah.

There he is again, the ham.

HN: In the last year though, the music and songs they've become less and less common. I think your last “Music Monday” was a year ago. Why is that?

Greg: Partly because they didn't really get a lot of hits, and they took awhile to put together. Another thing is that I tend to use, libraries to put them together, and libraries are a little susceptible to the content ID system. So for something that doesn't get a lot of attention that has the potential to be a copyright strike on the channel, eventually I quit doing it.

Petirep: Just wasn't worth the effort.

Greg: Yeah.

HN: Wasn't worth the possible hits towards your channel

Greg: Yeah

Norman: Well there is one in the works, isn't there?

Greg: Yeah, I am actually working on a song yes, with Ved who does the 4chan cup stuff.

HN: Ah Yes! ...Really?!

Greg: Yeah yeah! He's working with us. He actually did the folly for this upcoming thing we're doing right now. As well as-

HN: That thing that's going to show at the panel?

Greg: Yeah! As well as the new MAS episode he did the folly for that as well. It's way better. He's an actual sound engineer it sounds so much better.

HN: Going back to MAS, where did that idea come from? At the time there were a lot of abridged series floating around, was it just an offshoot of that?

Greg: There was someone who put out an audition because they wanted to do a abridged series. I went in to try as a voice actor, because I sounded like Braeburn. You know, young and sorta twinky [laughs] and so I could the southern accent because I was from the midwest and I was real close! They were like “Yeah, come in and do this” then they pulled the project for a long time and I got mad so I did my own.

HN: So you decided “You know what I can do this better, I'm ganna do it”

Greg: Yeah “I'm ganna do it!”

HN: Yeah, and look where it's gotcha! When you started writing for the characters where does that     compare with where you are right now with them?

Greg: I dunno, the show changes your perspective a little bit. I had to go back and watch the old, you know, Season 1, Season 2 and remember what it was I was even making parodies of sometimes. Because Twilight has changed so much! Since S1, S2, and Pinkie as well a little bit has turned around from where she used to be. So I dunno the show's changed a lot, and the characterization, so...

HN: Would you go as far as to say Flanderization?

Greg: Not necessarily federalization. Sometimes. Some cases. Twilight wasn't flanderized, Twilight   went the opposite. It seems like they tried to white wash all of her flaws and kind of make her uh, well, you know a-

Petirep: A Mary Sue.

Greg: Yeah, well a Princess. What they would market as a princess.

Petirep: Yeah! Boring!

You can't see it here, but that old guy is kicking some orphans.

HN: Greg talked about this a bit in one of his Personal Times, but Pet...what can you tell me about Equestria Primates?

Petirep: What can I tell you? I mean, we were putting big plans into it, but it was just more than I could handle. A little overly ambitious

Norman: Incredibly ambitious for a solo project

HN: What we saw looked amazing.

Petirep: Yeah, now that I do work for other companies and contract work. It's just, realistically something I can't do by myself.

HN: Was it always your goal to be working artist or did all this just sorta fall into your lap?

Petirep: It kinda fell into my lap a little bit. I've always been good at art and liked doing it, but I was discouraged from doing it. Eventually I just got an audience and realized it was something I could actually do, and so...

HN: You ran with it.

Petirep: I ran with it. It's great.

HN: Can you tell us about any upcoming projects?

Petirep: I'm always working on stuff for Monster Cat and some of my mainstream clients. For DawnSomewhere I'm helping out with the new RBDP. I'm doing a little animation.

HN: Lemme get to you Norman, you've been so patient there.

Norman: Hi.

HN: While I was researching for this interview-

Norman: Yeah

HN: -there was actually very little information on your past works or anything like that. So could   you give us a bit of a bio and let everyone know who you are and what you're working on right now.

Norman: With Greg's stuff I work a little bit on RBDP and with the Banana Republic stuff. I've done other stuff in the past, but under different names, nothing super interesting.

Greg: Gym. Gym as well

Norman: Oh yeah, I work on Gym of the Romantic Journey

HN: what could you tell me about Gym?

Norman: Gym of The Romantic Journey started out as kind of a one off skit. Like, a premise that Greg had. A Gym that had it's element rather than being Earth or Rock or Fire had the element of surprise. So every episode is just going to end with a terrible horrific surprise. And we kinda ran with that and came up with rather interesting things. Yeah, Gym, was like another  personal project I was working on for awhile, Project 99, which will never see the light of day. It was designed to be efficient to animate and it was that if nothing else. It worked very fast.

Gym of the Romantic Journey follows the disciples of Master Breakfist and their journey to be Grand fighting Masters.

HN: What were some of the newer challenges with Gym? We know it's an obvious parody on common anime troupes, but under the surface it has it's own story bubbling. Do you already have a solid beginning, middle and end?

Greg: When we went into it we did character building ahead of time and we knew about what were doing with the gym and did our world building as went. Which in retrospect might have been a mistake. We should have sat down and had an arc planned out knowing where we were starting and where we were ending.

Norman: We did end up with 8 or 9 episodes without the world progressing much. A lot of interesting little character moments but not a ton of stuff that really moved anywhere.

HN: When you woke up and found all the original MAS episodes had been removed, what was the initial feeling?

Greg: Really, anger. I wasn't really familiar with copyright law in the slightest, and at that point I had to start doing a ton of research to understand why it had happened in the first place. That was mulled even further by the fact that youtube doesn't really follow copyright law, I mean, it randomly punishes people. It's not really preventing copyright infringement, it's just attacking whoever's vulnerable to the system; and super unforgiving about it. So I had to look up a bunch of information and even got some people with legal background telling me I was probably fine, but couldn't do anything about it anyway.

HN: So you decided you needed to start drawing stuff yourself

Greg: Yeah, eventually.

HN: So when you put up MAS Episode 0 where did the initial reaction leave you?

Greg: Heh, well, people were uh...they thought the art was terrible! But the art was terrible. I expect people to think it was terrible. There was a lot of support though, there were telling me to keep at it and I'd get better, and I have gotten better but you know, can't help but look back and hate everything I've done, [laughter] but be excited about what I'm going to do.

Petirep: But such is the life of an artist.

I was told I could meet this dog if I used this picture. I have yet to hear or see any more of this supposed canine.

HN: Did you see a point where the future of the channel looked really grim?

Greg: Actually, no, because, it was not like my life ever hinged on MAS. I work off the youtube channel now, and that's how I make my living, but back then I was working as a land surveyor and CVS, and doing the channel. Then later I was doing CVS and the channel. So, I was never going to be in danger at those points in losing the channel. So I just kept at it I mean it was just like “Oh that was a set back” but I just kept on rolling with it.

HN: You rolled with the punches, did what you had to do.

Greg: Yeah!

HN
: Who or what do you contribute the improvement you saw in your art and animation in such a short time?

Greg: Oh, Norman has helped me out quite a lot

Norman: Well, he does a daily livestream and random people will jump in there and let him know     he's doing something wrong, and he picks up on it very quickly. Aisu, Pencils...

Greg: Aisu berates me haha; but she has helped me a lot. She started me out on a lot of the fundamentals.

Norman: Faust jumps in there from time to time

Greg: Yeah, and Pencils. Pencils who does the Marble Pie comic. He's in our group now, and so sometimes he'll do red lines of my stuff so I can figure out what I'm doing wrong. Just being friends with artist.

HN: Surrounding yourself with the right people.

Greg: Yes, people far more talented than myself.

HN: Last thing, what does the future hold for you and DawnSomeWhere?

Greg: What we're doing now is thinking about putting together a series that's going to be better developed. I had a thing called “Banana Republic” which were these shorts. It was going to be based off the monkey setting we did for “My Little Dashie”. We've done concept work on these monkeys and I'm going to sit down and put out six scripts for this thing and we're going to have kind of an arc like a season. Then we'll work on this, and hopefully if we get all six put together and everything is produced it'll be very cohesive we'll have a lot of progression and hopefully it will be exciting and will pull people in. Although we need to figure out what to do with advertising and how to get people hooked and looking for us. That's what we're going for next.

One of the lead characters of Banana Republic, Rae, at her job manning a gas station

HN: In the last couple of weeks, you were saying Gym wasn't really getting the views you wanted is it seeing improvement does it look like it's going to fall under?

Greg: We might come back to it with the same strategy we're going at Banana Republic with. We're going to sit down, and plan out how we want to progress with it then do a season worth of writing, and release episodes as they get completed.

HN: Last last thing. What's the best to keep track of your works and get the latest updates?

Greg: Subscribing to our youtubechannel is one of the biggest ways. Another thing to do is come to our nightly work streams, we always talk about what we're doing. We post on tumblr, twitter, all that stuff. Otherwise we have Dawnsomewhere.comwhere all the regulars keep up and talk about our stuff or otherwise post spam.

Norman: Yeah, Dawnsomewhere.comis where you're going to find all the stuff I'm doing with Greg.

Petirep: You can follow my tumblrwhich is Petirep, and my twitterwhich is also Petirep. Basically all the social medias that have Petirep behind them. Anything I am allowed to post publicly I will post them.

The following question was asked Sunday morning, I asked another question at the Mental Advance Series panel.

HN: When Equestria Primates was still an active project, you mentioned it would be the transition     from the pony universe, to the monkey universe we saw in “My Little Dashie”. Since that is                 no longer happening, is that transition still planned?

Greg: Equestria Primates was planned to be roughly six or seven parts. An opening, episodes for each character, though AJ was likely to stick with Rarity as a two-man act, and a closer. It was going to be about 90 minutes of content, so each part was going to be about 15 minutes long.

We were going to have the girls deal with super cliché high school stuff. Sunset Shimmer was going be replaced by “Sue Du” the mightest girl in school. She was going to ride around to class on a stallion and carried a halbred which she used to outright murder other contenders for prom queen. That reign of fear secured her position for four years, she's been a senior in high school for four years. She was going to have an adoptive mother “Donna Zuo” and two really dumb sidekicks; two kids from school named Clyde and Claudia. They were basically going to be regular real-world chimps in diapers. I figured the legacy of Sue Bu was equal to if not more plausible than what they really did with Sunset.

Pinkie's bit was going to involve sabotaging Sue Bu by establishing a love triangle between Sue Bue, Donna Zuo, and a boy at school named Dan Chan. Eventually Clyde and Claudia would get elected prom king and queen because everyone knew them from the school band.

Twilight's section was going to be entirely about Twilight using every method she could think of to get the crown aside from actually competing for prom queen. Rarity was going to try and win prom queen. They'd finally get the crown at the end when AJ politely asked Claudia is she could borrow it.

Dash was going to meet her alter-ego, and that alter-ago would be a spider monkey named Rae who works at a gas station, who lives with Pinkie's alter-ego and who is barely making ends meet. All the ponies were going to be adults pretending to be kids so they could get the crown back.

Fluttershy was going to save Christmas. Which was a cliché story we felt was appropriate given the cliché high school setting. But this was going to be after she got stuck on a bus that drove her out to the middle of nowhere, where Santa's sleigh had crashed. It was likely we were going to cut it and just have Fluttershy ride in at the finale in Santa's sled.

We're still planning some ambitious projects with the monkey characters, but without any of the transitions since the whole idea for the multi-part spoof of EqG was abit too much. The plans that now are unrelated to MLP in any form and will be a series of bizarre stories about three or four characters. Imagine something of a cross between the Twilight Zone and Hey Arnold, but with a bunch of spider monkeys and a gorilla as protagonists. A city where every shop, street, and laundromat has a completely true urban legend and the city government can't find tax revenue to plug up the leaky alternate dimensions.

So to answer your question, yes, but not through EqP.

You can watch the preview of Equestria Primates here. RIP.

So, there you go. A small glimpse into the history and future of the fandom's most beloved and respectable channels. Stick around kiddies, this horse is still bucking.

My reward for an interview well done. Still never got to meet that damn dog though.

Poni-versus Eagle Part 3 - PVL, Patreon, and Squandered Potential?

Guess who's back
Back again
Silver's back
Tell a friend
That's right everybody, it's time for Part 3 of the Poniverse Vs. Silver Eagle Saga, with another open letter from Silver himself. Following his first airing of grievances  the powers that be at Poniverse sent out their own reply. The ball is back in Silver's court and here's his return volley.

Below is the copypasta of his letter.

Hello again Horse News,

After last week's op-ed and press release and an exciting weekend of hearing absolutely nothing from either PVL nor their new overlords at Poniverse, I thought I'd update everyone who might be curious about what's new in the Poniverse/PVL drama world. Rather than spell it all out in paragraph form, since there are so many little items, I'm typing everything out as bullet points instead.
  • Poniverse's Press Release was (Naturally) Missing Some Details:
In a scrambled attempt to defend their actions and justify that taking over PVL, throwing me under the bus and continuing to take credit for my work was all the totally right thing to do, Poniverse and PVL published a press release claiming that their decisions were all based on a lapse of "professionalism" on my part. I addressed their accusations that I "hacked" into PVL's web site in the comments section of the earlier article ( http://www.horse-news.net/2016/04/ponyville-live-how-my-dream-became-my.html?showComment=1461111878530#c6616367966163284511 ) but let me summarize the same response here:

There was definitely no hacking, and there aren't any backdoors in PVL. Poniverse, in an attempt to skirt the hosting policy of PVL's web host while keeping the benefits of my personal accounts, had asked me to hand over my personal account details to them and move every non-PVL server off that account onto another one. I did this, and they then promptly went around telling every station and podcast that they could do just fine without anything I had contributed to the site. This pissed me off, so I turned those servers, which were still tied to my personal account, off for about a half hour.

Granted, even for that short interruption of service I felt like a real shithead, so I turned things back on pretty damn quickly. What Poniverse didn't tell you, of course, is that the week in which that happened had been such hell on earth for me, between PVL booting me out the door and a furry site threatening to sue me, that about 3 hours later that same night I was in my truck headed to the nearest flyover to hop off it and kill myself. For whatever reason, I decided not to, and went to the ER instead (which cost me a cool $1,600 or so). They didn't mention any of this because it doesn't fit the narrative they've stuck with, that I'm an aggressive mastermind plotting my own former network's demise, and not an imperfect human being fighting demons that a lot of us fight every day. It's just another in a series of shameful things they've done in their handling of this situation.
  • They Finally Updated the Footer Copyright, but with Some Conditions:
One of the biggest issues from the whole kerfuffle was that Poniverse had updated the Ponyville Live site footer to say "Copyright 2012-2016 Poniverse", as if their newfound ownership had retroactively assigned them copyright to the network, its code and branding, all the way back to its creation in 2012. This was obviously a seriously dick move, but they dragged their heels on fixing it, and refused to do anything about it at all when it was just me raising a fuss.

It was only thanks to pressure from other developers and station owners inside PVL that they did the right thing (just this once) and updated the site's footer to say:
Copyright © 2015-2016 Poniverse Networks. All Rights Reserved. Portions of this site originally copyright © 2012-2015 Bravely Blue Media LLC and Silver Eagle.

If it reads a little strangely to you, there's probably a good reason for that. They only approved the change under the following conditions:
     - They only allowed their site (Poniverse) to be a link, refusing to allow "Bravely Blue Media LLC" or "Silver Eagle" to link anywhere, even to my Twitter.
     - They deliberately used the phrase "portions of this site" to downplay the contribution involved, despite the fact that, as of this writing, 98.55% of all commits related to PVL (and 99.99% of the lines of code contributed) were written personally by me. To them, the only acceptable way of describing that was "portions".
  • They're Gutting PVL's Station Hosting, but Still Charging for It on Patreon:
Last summer (June 20 to be exact), I purchased a one-year extension to the license for CentovaCast, the broadcast management software that PVL has always used to host the radio stations that didn't want to host their stations on their own (receipt attached). This was one of the original purposes of PVL, to provide shared infrastructure for little stations that didn't have the money, means or interest in hosting their stations themselves. The license cost $165, just as it did for the prior years that I paid for it out of pocket.

Right around the same time that PVL director Dusk was telling me that I wasn't welcome around there, he was also telling station owners that Poniverse was gutting this service ahead of its June renewal. The stations would have to figure out some hosting arrangement of their own, though they weren't told what that arrangement could be or given assistance with migration of content.

If PVL isn't hosting radio stations any more, and they're not covering conventions any more, then what's left? Well, a web site, pretty much. All that's left of PVL will be its web site, the content aggregation system that I had built to support PVL's more ambitious operations in previous years.

So Poniverse isn't renewing its broadcast management software license, and the last time it was renewed, I paid for it. It's curious, then, that their Patreon page says that you'll be paying for (screenshot attached):
     - a shared radio server for Ponyville Live!'s radio stations, complete with broadcast management software

At the current rate, it won't be long before PVL is a shell of its former self, but Poniverse would still like your money for their hard work in that process. It's almost like the iceberg sending the Titanic a bill for "penetration testing".
  • A LOT of People Want Me to Set Up Another PVL:
In the fallout of last week's letter to the editor and resulting press release, a number of station owners, podcast hosts and personalities in the fandom have said that they don't think what's happening is right at all. Some have expressed that support in the form of leaving PVL, and several have offered to support me if I were to fork the open-source Ponyville Live codebase and continue right where I left off, except as a new site.

On one hand, I do sincerely believe that handing PVL over to Poniverse was a mistake, that Poniverse has squandered almost every opportunity to use its supervision of that project for the fandom's benefit, has failed to dedicate almost any attention to its improvement in the almost 5 months they've fully controlled it, and that forcing me out of the organization, then throwing me under the bus repeatedly, was about the worst way they could've handled that situation. If "another PVL" were to spring up with my support and energy, it would be the ultimate lesson to their leadership that no amount of power and control can make up for the passion they pushed away.

On the other hand, nobody wants another "media war". Competing against the very network I had worked so hard to build all those years would rip to shreds years of progress in "Bringing Pony People Together" (PVL's increasingly-ironic slogan), and would require starting at square one in almost every regard. Maybe if we were still living in 2013, with that same fire and energy in the fandom, that would be a possibility. Today, though, there's no question that the fandom's golden age has passed us by, and building a media network in PVL's shadow would be a low-yield exercise.

So, would I make my own PVL? Not the way you're thinking.

Let them run the web site. If the day ever came that they decided this whole PR disaster was more trouble than it was worth and handed me the keys again, I'd take PVL back and love it like it never left me. This isn't likely, though, especially considering how aggressive they've been in asserting their control of the site.

But I do still have some things that could prove useful: a few suitcases full of camera equipment, a video editing rig and software for it, and nothing much to do with my free time.

If nothing else, I might just...keep recording stuff until there's no more stuff to record.

People still like seeing things that happened at conventions, after all, and without anything to do that gives me a feeling of purpose or usefulness, I think I'd just lose my mind.

Plus, I might just start writing for Horse News. Those guys have a good time.

Since 4chan took on a new owner/manager, it's seen quite a few changes - mostly the addition of new boards. Some of which were sorely needed. Others? Well time will tell. Among these have been
/aco/ - Adult Cartoons,  /his/ - History & Humanities, /asp/ - Alternative Sports & Wrestling, /wsr/ - Worksafe Requests, /news/ - Current News, and probably most famously: /trash/ - Off-Topic.

Well as-of yesterday, there's a new board on the block - /qst/, which is a specialty board for "Quests". It has some unique formatting and looks like it could make for some fun times. Also all these extra boards means that we'll be getting even more competition in the 4chan cup.

Check it out:

http://boards.4chan.org/qst/thread/5/feedback-thread

Welcome to /quest/ - Quests Anonymous ## Mod Mod Icon 04/28/16(Thu)07:37:33 No.2

This board is for author-driven collaborative storytelling (i.e., "Quests"). In a quest there is a single author who controls the plot of the story and who drives the creative process. They can choose to take suggestions from other posters, or not, at their sole discretion. Quests can be text-based, image-based, or a combination of the two. Drawfaggotry is strongly encouraged!

To facilitate the author-driven nature of quests, /qst/ differs significantly from other boards in that the OP of a thread is considered the quest's author, and has some basic text formatting abilities: [b], [i], and color tags [red], [green], and [blue]. Therefore, only those people willing to put in the effort to be a quest author should post threads. If you do not intend to run a collaborative story, do not post a thread here! This includes meta-threads.

Dice rolling follows /tg/'s format (e.g., "dice+2d6" without the quotes in the options field rolls 2d6).

Custom Pony Visa Cards - For a good cause?

$

So it's not often that Horse News gets an email from companies wanting to promote their wares on our site... Well okay it is actually pretty often, but we have a consistent response to their inquiries. Horse News, being a not-for-profit website, never accepts money for placement on the site (and we're often shocked anyone would want to be in the first place) and that we have a different set of requests. MOST of those groups then never contact us again.

This is not true however, for the team at Card.com

They came to us last month, because they wanted more bronies to hear about their custom Prepaid Visa Cards, which are adorned with pictures of My Little Pony. We told them, that we wanted to continue to support victims of sexual abuse through our favorite charity RAINN.

Well, these guys are pretty awesome, and we were able to make an arrangement.

Instead of us receiving any payments, RAINN receives the benefits instead! Isn't that awesome? Gotta hand it to them for doing this. Now we want to encourage all of you to click that image link and check them out, and maybe even give these cards a shot, because the more support you show for this, the more support we can give to RAINN in the end!

As for the cards themselves, there's over 20 designs to pick from. They're licensed by Hasbro, and you can even get one with Spike on it if you want. According to the site, you can use them anywhere you would a normal Visa card, they're basically debit cards. It also says "No Credit Check",
"No overdraft fees, late fees or penalty fees", "No minimum balance", "Access to ATMs worldwide", and "Easy direct deposit".

So yeah. Not too shabby.

Thanks to Card.com and everyone else who worked with us to make this a reality.

RAINN is "The nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization".

Made you look.

Nightmare Nights in Dallas has another guest announcement.
Let's look who it is.

We’ve already announced our first four returning guests, so let’s announce someone new to Nightmare Nights – the incredibly talented Kelly Sheridan!
Kelly Sheridan is most well known in our community for her role as Starlight Glimmer, but she worked on My Little Pony for quite some time. Before Friendship is Magic, she voiced Cheerilee and Cotton Candy in the 2000s, and Melody in My Little Pony Tales from 1992. Outside ofPony, she is most well known for her role as the voice of Barbie for the last 15 years. She’s also had a long history providing dubbing for many incredibly popular anime, including InuYashaDeath NoteRanma ½Cardcaptors, and many more. She also tweets about her work at@KSheridanVoice.
As a reminder, applications for vendors is now open until June 28th. There’s no rush to apply; vendors will be selected via a jury system, not by first-come-first-serve, to ensure that there is a healthy variety for our vendors and attendees. Panelist applications are also open untilSeptember 9, so submit your panel concepts today!
We can’t wait to receive Kelly Sheridan and all of our guests and attendees at Nightmare Nights this October 21st through 23rd. Get your badges now, at a discounted rate until the convention. We’ve got a lot more announcements to come, so make sure to follow us on Twitter,Facebook, and Tumblr for more updates!

Ponies In Motion - the BABScon GM Berrow Interview @gmberrow

So despite our best efforts, we apparently managed to complete a series of interviews with VIPs during this year's BABScon. We've already shown you our magnum opus interview with Lauren Faust, and PhotoAnon has finally finished editing up the footage from the other interviews. As such, we're rolling out the BABScon Interview Series, beginning with show writer (and staff member most likely to put up with HN's shit) G.M. Berrow.

GM sat down with guest interviewer Dark Phoenix in this remarkably-#professional looking interview.

Typically I would put a transcription of the interview down here, but I just downed a liter of Vodka and Tonics and have decided to not do anything like that. You're just going to have to watch it like a bum for now.

The Seventh Seal of the Animation Crapocalypse has opened - Powerpuff Teen Titans Crossover

These are dark times there is no denying. The animation industry has perhaps faced no greater threat than it does today. But I say this to our citizenry: We....
well... We got nothin.

An image has been floating around the internet that is making some people ask "why" and others to find out what barrel-oil tastes like. It is the seventh seal of the animation crapocalypse, and it's coming to Cartoon Network at the end of July.

And it's not the only "oh shit" news coming out of the industry this week.
Remember when Hasbro was in talks to buy Dreamworks animation (before Disney torpedoed that faster than you can say "please mouse daddy spank me harder")? Well it appears that Dreamworks has a far more cruel fate.

The studio that brought us such timeless animated stories as The Prince of Egypt, and How To Train Your Dragon (and also a number of DVDs to pollute the bargain bin down at your local K-Mart "Going out of business sale") will be owned by the company with the Worst Customer Service In The Country - officially - Comcast.

Comcast bought Dreamworks for $3.8 Billion, which means they're going to want to make that investment money back fast, so it's safe to say Shrek 5-8 will be coming to a theater near you.

Oh and then there was the Daytime Emmy awards...

You'll recall that Hasbro studios had been nominated for a few awards this year, again, and they were happy to tell us in a Press Release that - They Won!

But, not how you would want.

The email reads as follows:

Hi there,

As you may have already seen, the 43rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards winners were announced this past weekend, and Hasbro Studios earned a nice win after being nominated for four categories! Jeff Bennett received an award for “Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program” for his role as Mayor Luskey in Transformers Rescue Bots (on Discovery Family). For reference, we’ve shared each of the Hasbro nominations for you below, and you can find the complete list of winners here: http://www.eonline.com/news/761316/2016-daytime-emmy-award-winners-the-complete-list
WINNER:
Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program
Nomination: Jeff Bennet as Mayor Luskey in Transformers Rescue Bots (Discovery Family)

NOMINATIONS:
Outstanding Special Class Animated Program
Nomination: Transformers Robots in Disguise (Cartoon Network)

Writers: Nicole Dubuc, Brian Hohfeld, Greg Johnson
Story Editors: Cydne Clark, Steve Granat, Andrew R. Robinson

Outstanding Original Song
Nomination: “The Magic Inside” in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic (Discovery Family)
Lyricist & Composer: Daniel Ingram
Lyricist: Amy Keating Rogers

Please let us know if you’re able to cover this exciting news!

Best,
[REDACTED]

That's right folks.
MLP lost to a song from a Soap Opera, and the Daytime Emmy that Hasbro got to take home was for a human character in their...Rescue Bots cartoon. Daniel Ingram's work has been nominated for the Emmy 4 times now, and has gotten shafted each time. This time he lost to this:

Daniel has quickly taken Leonardo DiCaprio's vacancy at the "will he ever win it?" table.

Now back to that image at the top.

Teen Titans Go, the previous lord of the kingdom of disgraceful reboots, will be doing a crossover episode with it's own successor, The Powerpuff Girls reboot. You may recall that Tara Strong - the Voice for Twilight Sparkle, Raven from Teen Titans, and the original Bubbles - was upset by not being asked to reprise her role in the reboot for PPG, as she was in TTG. Well that will probably make this crossover all the more painful to watch when they mix the two together.

Will it...CAN it be worse than the Steven Universe / Uncle Grandpa crossover?

Of course it can!

At least 1 of those shows had redeeming qualities BEFORE the merger!
This one?
Well now we're going to see what nuclear waste does when it seeps into a septic tank.

Here have some >no hooves with some hooves to make you forget everything.

Another staff member well-versed in putting up with us, Josh Haber, sat down with HN during BABScon for another interview, presented here by PhotoAnon. In it he says words.
Haber, coincidentally, is HN's most-interviewed staff member, having given us a sit-down chat at least once a year since we spawned.
If you want to re-read the old interviews check out the links.

Yeah, scheduled this one at the same time as GM's interview. I didn't become even slightly more sober since posting that one, so no transcriptions for that yet.

God damn dude.

What you just saw is a composite of a number of tweets from Big Jim Miller, who appears to be pretty tired of the criticism coming from Twitter. Jim is the current Supervising Director on My Little Pony. Or maybe he's specifically tired of Murrison...
Either way, he got his point across!

Utah Declares Porn "A Health Risk" - Utah Anons move to Save their Waifus

Sales of Anti-Masturbation Crosses skyrocketed after the announcement.
UTAH -- In a move that shocked the nation, Utah State Senator Todd Weiler (R) introduced a resolution on 15. April, that he claims "recognizes the need for education, prevention, research, and a change of policy on both societal and communal level that addresses the pornography epidemic that is harming Utah and the nation."

The response thereof has so far been a resounding negative one, with many Anons who live in Utah wondering just how they're ever going to come inside Rainbow Dash. Other have decided to take up their own crosses and rebel to what they describe as "religious mandated tyranny."

"They're not going to stop me from fapping to my waifu!" declared one Anon. "When I touch myself to the thought of penetrating deep in-- hold on a sec guys, someone's banging loudly at the door."
Strangely, we were unable to obtain any further comment from him, though our microphones were able to pick up the sound of what seemed to be incoherent yelling and loud banging noises.

"I'm being mocked by the media about this, but it's a serious issue, porn is a health risk! And it has nothing to do with my wife leaving me for Chad McThundercock, or me feeling guilty about playing with my Devil's Flute to videos on Brazzers afterward and wanting to repent," proclaimed Weiler.

While many are concerned with the ever increasing overreach powers of Utah state and the Mormon majority, other Anons have pledged to send emergency Clop Packages to those victims stranded in the state of Utah, so they can hold out a little bit longer.

Back at good ole Dallas, Bear, Stouts, and I did a tequila interview with two members of the >no hooves girls team. Then, the tape were lost in the middle of a pile of "My Little Porny" DVD's in the HN office that was buried under empty vodka bottles.

Looking back, that Sunset Shimmer drinking game was a bad and a good idea at the same time. Anyway, Interview!

EFNW Convention: The Crebering DLC Packages

$
0
0

With a new move that's causing backlash over the methods on paying for convention costs, the upcoming Everfree Northwest MLP convention has decided to mix things up by adding what some are referring to as "Convention DLC" - by charging patrons for single exclusive events, should they decide to pay extra for them. These costs are on top of what most con-goers pay for, and of course, are voluntary.

The concept of paying for a higher-priced badge, in order to have access to exclusive events/items at conventions is nothing new. Ever since the first Brony conventions back in 2011, there has been a practice where most conventions sell unlimited regular passes, and limited higher-priced passes in exchange for more things that regular patrons would not have access to, such as exclusive dinners with the VA's, head-of-the-line privileges, convention exclusive merchandise, and so on. The general idea is that, the more expensive the badge, the more access one receives - though they are a one-time payment made in advance, prior to the convention starting.

We have learned that most of the convention funds are made in the last few days prior to the con, and during the convention itself; starting off the con weekend having made about 40%~60% of their sales - with the rest being sold at the door. Therefore, given the venue's demands for partial payment up front before the convention even starts, the following actions made by EFNW to cover the normal operating costs don't seem to make a lot of sense from a con-goer's perspective, they make perfect sense from the convention's standpoint (seeing as their goal is not to be in the red) - and is the source of the backlash we've been hearing about.

So Everfree Northwest decided to shake things up a bit by not only having such expensive badges, but by having most of them pay extra for some "exclusive" events that, some of which but not all, are normally free. It should be noted, that the last Brony convention to pull a stunt such as this was Las Pegasus Unicon. And we all remember what happened with that particular convention.

Going for a very hefty price of $2,500 USD, the "Tree of Friendship" badge gets one pretty much everything, including a comped room and, more importantly, the "Tickets Included for First Access to purchase exclusive event tickets."

Everyone else gets to stand in a line to pay for tickets for each individual paywall event, with higher sponsors getting head-of-the-line privileges. That is something new, and based on the reactions so far, not being received very well.

IMPORTANT: We do not know at the present time if these extra proceeds go to EFNW as income, charity, or even as profit. Based on whom the events are catered around, we are making the assumption that they are income for balancing the convention's budget - that is, paying off the VA's, the venue, etc; which is normal behavior for a convention. What's disturbing is how they're going about it.

With insider knowledge gleaned from someone who knows just how much conventions cost, and the actions required to balance the budget; paying off the venue, the Guests of Honor's agents, etc. - it is then understandable why they would do this, for running conventions are expensive and most are lucky to break even in most cases. Other conventions have stopped operating entirely due to the rising costs (we are told this is mostly due to agent's charging higher appearance fees for the Guests of Honor) whilst con attendance plateaus or even dips in comparison with the previous years.

Still, offering it in the form of DLC is probably not the best way to do it, should these conventions continue. As the saying goes, you cannot squeeze blood out of a stone. That, or the agents managing the special guests should start charging fees based on what they're worth, rather than constantly inflating the price as years go on, forcing the conventions to raise their prices in turn by adopting more outlandish ways of doing so, thereby alienating some of their customers in the process. As far as our experiences are, and that of others', no other convention even dares to tread this far.

Note that the events listed on the schedules with the golden ticket icon are the ones where most patrons have to pay extra, on top of their badge, to get into. And these tickets are only good for the event one purchases them for, so to get into the other ones, one must purchase yet another ticket. At last we understand why people are calling this "Convention DLC"

Friday's Schedule:

>CMC Reunion Dinner - $250
Time: 17:30-19:30
Enjoy a VIP Dinner with the Cutie Mark Crusaders and their super parents! Featuring Maddy Peters, Claire and Ian Corlett, Michelle, Monique, and Michael Creber, and Gabriel Brown (a.k.a. Black Gryph0n) $250 per person.

>Just Desserts VIP Social - $100
Time: 20:00-22:00
Kick back and relax with our VIP guests while you enjoy some amazing Sugarcube Corner treats. $100 per person

Already in one night, one would have to shell out an extra $350 just to attend these exclusive events, on top of what patrons have already paid for. Yikes! And the way they have it set up, you don't get the dessert along with the dinner unless you pay up that extra $100 for the privilege.

Saturday's Schedule:

>Lunch with Fluttershy and Friends
Time: 10:30-12:30
Come join the Voice Actors behind Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie, Big Mac, Shining Armor, and two amazingly talented book authors and show writers for lunch! Featuring Andrea Libman, Peter New, Andrew Francis, G. M. Berrow, and M. A. Larson. $250 per person

Grand Total So Far (GTSF): $600

>Class Act
Time: 14:00-16:00
Join two seasoned voice actors as they host an unforgettable voice acting lesson on site at the convention. Space is very limited and the cost is incredibly low for a 2 hour group session. Don't miss out! Featuring Brian Drummond and Trevor Devall $75 per person

GTSF: $675

>High Society Banquet
Time: 17:30-19:30
Dust off your jacket and adjust your tiara, because the elite are ready to eat! Actually, don't let that glitz and glamour fool you. These ponies just want to share a special evening with you. Join Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, Babs Seed, and Filthy Rich for a meal fit for a princess. Space is limited, so get your tickets while they last! Featuring Chantal Strand, Shannon Chan-Kent, Brynna and Brian Drummond. $250 per person

GTSF: $925

>Kelamis Comedy Showcase
Time: 21:45-22:45
Standup Comedy featuring pony convention newcomer and the voice behind such outlandish MLP characters as Fashion Plate and Big Daddy McColt, come hear the hilarious offerings of the comedian and voice actor, Peter Kelamis! (Clean comedy, but 16 and older recommended) $25 per person

GTSF: $950

In two nights alone, if one were to go to all these paid events, he could easily find himself $950 down the hole. But we aren't done yet.

Sunday's Schedule:

 >AT HOME Concert
Time: 14:30-16:00
AT HOME: an acoustic concert with Michelle Creber, Gabriel Brown, Monique & Michael Creber, and Andrea Libman. Join us for an unplugged performance of originals and covers in an intimate setting with great singing, beautiful harmonies, outstanding piano playing, plenty of audience interaction, and guaranteed laughs! $40 per person

GTSF: $990

So there you have it. At a whopping $990 for all of these paid events, not including the original con badge price, the price for the hotel room, merchandise costs, and food/drink/alcohol. At this rate, people would likely spend less on a full week long trip to Disneyland.

A recurring theme that has not escaped our attention is the omnipresence of the Crebers and BlackGryph0n. While this isn't the first time mother and manager Monique Creber had decided to practically sell her child and boytoy together for profit - charging Skype users $100 for a 30 minute talking session with Michelle and BlackGryph0n -  we would not be surprised if we found out she was one of the people who had some form of influence in determining how things are ran.

Oh...
Oh boy.

Depending on how EFNW goes, there might be a lot more pushback against this sort of action. On the one hand, managing a convention's budget is very expensive, with a lot of costs needing to be paid off prior to the con even starting; to the venue, to the agents, etc. Having said that, a con goer's experience is going to be severely hampered when they find later on down the road that half the stuff they used to enjoy for the price of a regular badge before is now hidden behind an extra paywall, should this practice continue. So it's a bit of a muddy gray area.

What do you think? Are there better solutions other than "Con DLC" that conventions can employ to combat the rising cost of running one, yet slowly falling con attendance overall? From what we understand, most convention heads can't or won't even talk about this sort of thing because from a financial and legal standpoint, they can't. But they can see what the reaction coming from their customers are and react accordingly. In any case, we wish that everyone going there has a good time during EFNW.

Selena Gomez fools Internet with Temporary My Little Pony tattoo

So, this week a picture of Selena Gomez was posted in which you can see a tiny Vinyl Scratch / DJ-Pon3 tattoo on her left hip. For some reason the internet, including the people at Equestria Daily fucking exploded over this, because none of them has ever bought a My Little Pony collectible dog tag before.

Please direct your attention to the tattoo in the top-right corner. You'll note that it (#8 of 12) shows Vinyl in the exact same image and pose (mirrored, because that's how temporary tattoos work) as the one on Selena Gomez's leg.

So, either she had the most uncreative tattoo artist on the planet...or the logical, correct answer....

It's fake everybody, you can go back to your miserable lives now.

MLP: The Movie going to Cannes Film Festival?

So, Lionsgate has announced that "My Little Pony: The Movie" is going to be on their roster for the Cannes film festival. Not only that...it's slated for the 2016 festival according to deadline.

Wait What?
The last we heard, it was being released in October of 2017.
The 2016 Cannes is 11 – 22 May 2016
That's like...this week.
Something's wrong here...

http://deadline.com/2016/05/lionsgate-cannes-slate-2016-now-you-see-me-3-patriots-day-mark-wahlberg-my-little-pony-1201752222/

"Lionsgate has announced its 2016 Cannes Film Festival sales slate, billing it as the studio’s biggest yet, comprising eight titles."

"In addition, Lionsgate’s Cannes roster includes the Hasbro co-production My Little Pony: The Movie with voices from Emily Blunt and Kristin Chenoweth"

http://variety.com/2016/film/news/cannes-lionsgate-now-you-see-me-3-my-little-pony-1201769595/

It's being reported in both Variety AND Deadline...
This movie might be on a screen....this month! Or more likely it's a trailer for the upcoming film. Either way, something pony related is going to Cannes. It's not very clear what a "sales slate" refers to in this instance. Guess we'll find out? Some are saying it has to do with selling the foreign rights to the film. "Lionsgate relies on pre-sales of foreign rights to finance its movies" - which indicates that they will be trying to get interest in the movie for distribution.

Hang with us while we try to figure out the extent of this together!
