TheLostNarrator in recovery after "BASKETBALL" sized ovarian cyst removed - Album for medical costs released

$
0
0

For those of you who don't know, a member of the MLP fan community who goes by the name "TheLostNarrator" recently underwent some intense surgery. According to her and her friend Magpiepony, she had an "ovarian cyst of an alarming size" removed from her body. How big is "alarming"?

"They said it was the size of a basketball, and it was ten liters."

...10 liters....What a trooper.

Fortunately she appears to be doing well, though her medical expenses are going to be extensive. In an effort to assist her, a group of pony musicians are releasing an album for sale, with a  $1500 portion going to pay her remaining bills and upon her request the rest of the money will go to the Jed Foundation.

The album is available now on this bandcamp page: https://ataraxiamusician.bandcamp.com/

Info Copypasta:

"The album (if you purchase it, please do!) also includes a digital booklet full of fan art from artists all tasked with one thing; to draw Lost Narrator in whatever way they saw fit. This digital booklet also includes track listings, special messages from some of the involved artists, and thank-yous to everyone who has purchased the album.
The first $1,500 the album makes will be going directly to Lost Narrator in order for her to help pay her recovery bills. Anything made by the album after that will be donated directly to The Jed Foundation to go towards promoting emotional health and preventing suicide. We've discussed this with Lost and Magpie, and Lost was adamant about the money being used to prevent self harm and abuse. We are confident with your assistance we will pass our initial goal of $1,500 and raise even more for The Jed Foundation. If this is successful, you guys will be a part of a huge event in this community; another time where the entire community united together under a common goal to help others in need.
The album will be posted on my personal BandCamp page at around 8:00-9:00 PST tonight (March 16th, 2016).
It costs $7.99 (or more, if you're feeling generous).
Thank you all so much for helping us in this endeavor. You're helping people while getting some dope music out of it. You guys are awesome.
P.S: We're partnering with Horse News, PonyvilleLive!, PonyvilleFM, and Horse Music Herald for this release. Go support all of those people too, they are all amazing for helping us spread our goal.

Horse News Reviews: Friendship is Magic #40

$

0
As I'm sure some of our long time readers can guess, we here at Horse News have quite the history with the licensed IDW comics. From Ted Anderson to Jeremy Whitley to Andy Price, we've had more than our fair share of run-ins. However, if only to torture ourselves, some of our reporters still read the comics. With the hiatus shorter than ever, their destraction purpose is less relevant but they can always bring some laughs. With that being said, issue #40, which attempts to tell the story of how Twilight and Spike met, is worth a look for criticism's sake. Read a Horse News review below.
Shades of Muffinshire

The comic opens up with Twilight reminiscing over her first day at school while looking at a scrapbook. Ted “I Hate All Men” Anderson initially got some criticism over a very similar setup to a fan comic, Muffinshire's Twilight's First Day.However, as one reads on it becomes obvious that not only was that comic not followed, but what it offered was of little substance.

Sethisto already drew her

After some brief bait for Sethisto and other assorted Trixiefags, Celestia leads Twilight into a nursery where Spike is laying in a crib. She claims that though she has been taking care of him since he was hatched, it ultimately will be her responsibility to care for him when she is incapable of doing so. Keep that comment in particular in mind, as it becomes relevant later.

"Help"

What follows for many pages is pretty much what we have come to expect from IDW: basically some padding with shenanigans of Twilight being stressed out by raising a child on her own and balancing her studies. All of the ponies in the school (all female for some reason, possibly courtesy of Ted “Not Like Those Other Guys” Anderson's bias or maybe Hickey's desire for anime references) are incredibly uncaring and unempathetic to Twilight's struggle in raising Spike. Perhaps most bizarrely of these is Professor Inkwell, who, according to previous issues, helped to make the school into what it was when Twilight attended. That Celestia would not explain to her the duties she was entrusted with seems oddly uncaring of her, like she either expected that everyone would understand or she knew no one would see it as an obstacle for her.

No sympathy for unwed teenage mothers

The rest of the comic goes off well enough, with the expected marks: Twilight brings Spike to a major event, he gets loose and causes a mess, and she breaks down at him. In a fit of anger and stress, she calls the infant Spike “stupid” and “a nuisance,” and questions why he can't be anything like Smarty Pants. Spike's baby talk in this scene slowly morphs into Twilight realizing that Celestia meant for Spike to be her friend, and she bestows upon him his name. The comic returns to the present day and everything is fine.

 "Yes, that's the plan...a friend..."

Princess Celestia's depiction in the comic and her ultimate goals are incredibly hard to discern in this comic. As a princess, she claims that she does not have the time to raise Spike full-time, so she gives him to Twilight. Her claim about her only being responsible for him sometimes turns out to be a lie. What Celestia actually gives Twilight turns out to be such a burden on her that not only is she doing poorly in school and barely managing to take care of a newborn, but she also is not making any friends.

That Celestia would entrust a filly to raise a newborn as an experiment to give her a friend raises some questions. Why involve Spike at all if this is the goal, why not try to get other fillies who are on an equal footing with her to be her friend? As we see several times in the comic, Spike is completely dependent on her for his care, and is not a friend to her in any form. One could assume that Celestia would want their friendship to grow as they grew up together, but there in lies another issue: Spike's role. What he eventually became, her servant, undercut what Celestia supposedly was trying to do. He helped her become obsessed with her studies and ultimately become a hermit that required the mission to Ponyville at the start of the series. If Celestia's plan was to convince Twilight to turn away from making friends as a filly and “raise” a friend that would contribute to her isolation as she grew up, she was absolutely successful. However, if her actual goal was to give Twilight an understanding of friendship, she totally failed. Twilight got a responsibility that alienated herself from her peers and instead did what she was ordered to do by Celestia. Some have argued that this was the plan of Celestia all along, while others, such as this reviewer, believe it to be a severe miscalculation of Celestia's that ultimately comes down to bad writing and a desire to explain away claims of incompetence.

Usually these edits are bad, but this is pretty on point.

Twilight and Spike's relationship is that many fans of the series had a lot of questions about. There was a lot of dread when this issue was announced, fear that it would close doors that the show could explore better. Those fears ultimately were unfounded. What we received turned out to be a piece of fluff with some very bad implications for Twilight and Spike's early life, plus even more questions about Celestia's motivations relating to Twilight's destiny. I have not mentioned the art at all in this review, but I will say that it was definitely one of the high points of the issue. However that cannot save a story that ultimately raises more questions than answers and has unfortunate implications for nearly everyone involved. One can only imagine what the author was thinking when he thought making Twilight an unwed teenage mother was something that could be handled well. Stick to Muffinshire folks, and pray that a post-Larson show gives us some questions on this issue.

You said it, Spike

3/5

Pros:
  • Good art by Brenda Hickey
  • Trixie's mom
  • Technically follows Faust interpretation of relationship
  • Acceptable ending, taken out of context

Cons:
  • Celestia's “IT'S JUST A TEST, BRO” explanation
  • Contrived reasons for characters to be against Twilight
  • Reason for sudden shift of Twilight's interpretation of the relationship is based on Celestia, not Twilight
  • Celestia's character either being incompetent or openly malicious
  • Explains quite a bit about Twilight's IDW depictions based on what she learned from Celestia

Guardians of Harmony Animation Announced?

$

0

March is turning out to be the inverse of our typical Drama Februaries. After getting the release date of S6 moved up over a month, now we have news on a potential series or film for the "gender neutral" Guardians of Harmony toyline.

Similar to the registration of the trademark in June of last year, someone managed to find a trademark for the same"Guardians of Harmony" name filed just last month. What makes this one different though, is that it is in the category of "Entertainment services, namely, an on-going animated television series for children." Guardians of Harmony was of course showed off at Toy Fair in February and was the subject of much discussion among fans about whether or not the series was going full DEEPEST LORE. With this new announcement, it appears we have more than just toys to anticipate.

It's not known if Chrysalis' wheel powers will culminate in a battle with Trixie in the animation (Art by Klondike)

It is worth noting that Equestria Girls was also trademarked in that same category, and a series has not emerged for that either. Friendship is Magic itself was also trademarked as "an ongoing series" before it even aired. Considering the fact that it seems like each individual market that Hasbro goes into requires a separate trademark, this one is of note even if it is not a full series. What this trademark confirms is that there is some sort of animation in the works for Guardians of Harmony. Whether this is Equestria Girls-style movie releases, a series of its own, or even some sort of successor series appears to be up in the air. But it appears that we will get another division of the franchise for people to endlessly shitpost on /mlp/ with to enjoy with other fans of the series.

The memes of course, have already arrived.

MLP facebook teaser unlikely to reach share goal anytime soon - unless you get off your ass.

12 hours ago - that's half a day in human years - the MLP facebook page put up a new teaser video for next week's Season 6 premier, featuring a few incredibly brief glimpses of the upcoming episodes. While this in itself is nothing out of the ordinary, the underwhelming response to its release surely is.
The video, which was promptly promoted by the fervent hordes of Equestria Daily, came with a familiar incentive; "If this video reaches 6,000 shares, you’ll unlock an EXCLUSIVE 2-minute clip from the season premiere!"

This sort of thing has in the past been met with a swift flurry of shares in a race to receive the next clip, something that...doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon.

In 12 hours (at the time of writing) even with the promotional push of EQD and countless other community sites, the video only mustered 1397 shares total - less than one-quarter of the challenge goal.

Of that number, less than 350 have come in the last 6 hours. Momentum has slowed to a crawl.

Basically, unless something big happens, and the shares start picking up pace (or the facebook decides to just release it anyway) we won't be seeing the new footage for quite a while....or at all, before the actual premier.

Is this because there's less interest in pony lately? Or is it because less people are comfortable with sharing an MLP video on their own facebook page?

Either way, we're sure you can't be any more of a disappointment than you already are so go ahead and share it.

Season 6 is coming on March 26th, 11:00 AM EST on Discovery Family Channel!! And there are going to be a lot of new...

For those of you who don't know yet, there's a robotics team working to build a fully-functioning pony-droid. Essentially they're building SweetieBot IRL.

MLP-MSP Hotel to be demolished (UPDATE)

Inappropriate venue, you say?

In a stunning turnaround, rumor has it that Draftcon has lost 100% of it’s event space, at least a 50% increase over the supposed loss of space that Nightmare Nights faced last year from the only thing that got people interested in the con in the first place (hint, its not final draft or his ego): The Mall of America

According to a article yesterday by a local FOX affiliate, the hotel used by MLP-MSP has been deemed a inappropriate venue by the Bloomington port authority, citing that the venue is "functionally obsolete". The Mall of America has purchased the hotel and the property, and has slated the hotel to close in 30-60 days, way before the MLP-MSP event.

Even attempts to book a room through the hotel has came up with this

As for the future of the con, lets hope final was #professional enough to include a decent cancellation clause in the contract, its the only way the con can happen this year.

At press time Draftcon has not issued a public statement about how this effects the convention this year.

Questions from prospective attendees and vendors have apparently not been answered.

On a personal note: Don't call this a unfortunate circumstance, call it "karmic justice" for EQLA

Another convention in that hotel has given this information:

UPDATE: The convention has released a statement:

"

Announcement Regarding Our Forced Change of Venue

We’re blaming Discord.

Good evening, friends! We have some news to share with you about the venue for our con. We were hoping to have more information to share with you before addressing the situation, but as it’s going to take a bit to sort things out we didn’t want to wait any longer to give an initial update.
As you may have already heard, the contracted venue for MLP-MSP 3, the Ramada MSP Airport at the Mall, has been sold and will be out of business in the next 30-60 days. As a result we will need to find a different venue for the convention. Several other cons have been affected by this as well including Anime Fusion2D Con,CrypticonTol-Con, and many others. The support the community has shown for the convention scene has been nothing short of heartwarming, and we thank you all for the messages we’ve received in the last 24 hours.
Our management team is already hard at work finding a new venue for MLP-MSP 3. Our primary concern is doing right by the hundreds of people that have already purchased tickets, so keeping the convention on the same weekend and in the same general area is our top priority. We also promise to keep badge costs the same and also want to keep room costs and everything else in the same ballpark as well, so it may take a bit to find the best answer for everyone involved. As Nightmare Nights detailed a little while ago, convention finances are a complicated beast, so while this task will be challenging, we assure all of you that we are on top of the situation and are moving as quickly as we can to find a solution.
We’re going to miss the Ramada. It may not be the most modern facility, but the history of the Thunderbird and the character of the place is what brought us back for our third year. A new home will open up opportunities to try different things though, so we’re excited to get started making plans for our new space as soon as we’ve selected one!
Any hotel reservations will be cancelled and if you need any confirmations of cancellation the Guestroom Reservation Manager, Kendra Goelz, will send those to you."

We actually got mail from one of Hasbro's PR teams - HA!

Ohh man. Some days, things just keep getting better and better. Apparently, we - Horse News - are actually receiving direct messages from one of Hasbro's Public Relations teams. This is of course a huge 180 degree turn from our assumption that Hasbro either has no idea we exist or hates us. Ya know; US. Those guys. The ones with the lingerie contests and the jokes about the buttsex.

Hello sweeet sweeet validation.

Anyway what they sent - 2 emails over the last 2 weeks - aren't anything really super urgent or that we didn't already know, but that's beside the point.

If YOU didn't know; MLP is up for a Daytime Emmy, and there was also a Game of Thrones style trailer released earlier this month.

Oh, guess what, TOMORROW IS SEASON 6!

We survived another hiatus. Though this one felt hollow compared to the previous year-long ordeal. It's like we never truly left.

I won't be watching because it will be like nighttime and I'll be in Tokyo during all that.

Scruffy vs. /mlp/ - Dusk of Shitposting

$

Yesterday, /mlp/ had its collective jimmies rustled when Scruffy, the mysterious mastermind behind the heavy handed "moderation" that happened shortly after Lauren Faust's visit to the board back in 2013 known as "The Scruffening", struck again.

Editor's Note: The following article is written by our intern, Shell Shock

Monday night was a quiet, but stressful night, as the longtime board moderator Scruffy brought the hammer down once again - this time specifically on "role-playing" threads. In a stickied and locked thread posted to the board that same afternoon, Scruffy announced that "low-effort greentext bait" threads pollutes the board, and their existence drives away other forms of content, citing /mlp/'s rule 3 as justification for it.

>"Roleplaying is when people responding to the thread are expected to take on an active role as the character in the story."
Scruffy, May 2016

While these threads from now on are to be quickly and quietly deleted, Scruffy added an exception, stating that the "Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA)" threads are not affected by this new interpretation, and therefore will continue to be allowed.

Naturally the reaction of the board's users, in threads both on /mlp/ and /qa/, were nothing less than we expected.

Despite all this, the very next day the board returned to it's usual self by Tuesday afternoon. No word yet if the users who tried to slip through were simply banned, or merely ran out of GBP and lost Internet privileges.

So...
Yeah.
Things are pretty dull around here lately. It seems like nobody has really noticed though. Most of the news is pretty small potatoes anymore. "Oh there's a new episode synopsis"..."oh there's a new preview clip"...Whoop-de-friggin-do. What really is keeping us motivated is the upcoming convention season.

BUCK is playing their last encore this weekend, and we'll be sending a couple guys to document it. If you're in the UK, you should go toast the end of an era.

Next weekend - the 15th-17th - Midwest Media Expo will be returning, but this time in Dearborn just outside of our Detroit HQ - you can expect some pony shit going down there.

BABScon is coming up this month too from the 22nd to the 24th. That'll have some cool people, and also Chelis. Lauren "Mama" Faust will be there (too bad Hell would have to freeze over for us to talk to her) and so will Jeremy "Dragontown" Whitley so there will be some fun contrast to look forward to. Our friend Catie Wayne is going, and she's now a Voice Actress for Disney so be sure to ask her about that.

I myself will of course not be attending any of those, as the Pacific Ocean is a big thing and even I can't swim that far that fast.

I did however attend "AnimeJapan" 2 weekends ago, one of the largest Anime conventions on the planet, right in Tokyo.

Let's take a look at those pics because why the fuck not.
Cygames was there. They're making THIS now.

First and foremost I'd like to say; 120 thousand anime fans gathered in one place does NOT disappoint when it comes to that all-important "What The Fuck" factor.

AnimeJapan is, unlike many US convention, actually operated by a number of the Anime studios themselves, making it more of a tradeshow than a fan event. This has the advantage of having shitloads of free stuff, but the disadvantage of having almost nothing actually for sale. Except, of course, for anime sex pillows. Behold, the proud Dakimakura Dealer.

The place was absolutely packed, and yet it didn't reek of B.O. or obnoxious noise levels.

Almost the only cosplay was done on the part of people being paid to be there. Which seemed...off.

I have a feeling those aren't their real hair colors.

Even here, in Tokyo, it is impossible to escape someone in a rainbow unicorn hoodie.

I've been informed that this is a dude. Go figure.

I have no idea what this booth was, and I walked through it. Something to do with monsters, suits of armor, and vacant-expression women in these outfits.

A trip to Tokyo wouldn't be complete without a 40 foot pikachu ass floating overhead.

Yeah hand it over bitch.

The Powerpuff Girls are pretty popular it seems. Wonder if Craig McCracken gets any of this money.

Cute girls riding motorcycles.

Noisiest part of the whole trip - some JPOP concert in progress - some band called I*Ris

Yeah those ones.

I think Japan is trying to break into the Walmart Christmas Lawn ornament market.

Not pictured: All the anime boobs. Everywhere.

happy...Easter?

So after a while I had to get out of there and ended up in the mecca of weebs everywhere - Akihabara.

Luckily I'm not one. Or else I would have spent a SHITLOAD of money.

So. Much. Porn.

Yeah. You squeeze and twist her boob to get your toy. And it's painful. She's in tears.

Goddd damn Japan.
After a couple hours of wading through gratitutous amounts of anime lewd, I decided I needed to find something less sexual.

A pair of brown balls covered in fuzz and white goo to put in my mouth? That's better.

The whole time I was there, I didn't see a single Godzilla attack, not ONE robot fight, no life-or-death card games, hell I couldn't even find a decent ramen shop or special Kit Kat bars (or vending machines selling women's panties).

The whole country was clearly a mess, so I asked to see their manager.

Shortly after attempting to enter the Emperor's palace I had to leave the country.

Probably for the best...considering I don't fit in it.

There you have it, some random convention coverage to kick off a month of pony cons. To everyone going to BABScon this year: party hard for me, and don't let anyone near the entertainment if they have a debit card in their hand.

No, really. Recently discovered and posted to /mlp/, a 47 second video has surfaced featuring a greenscreened Pinkie Pie and Twilight Sparkle, spreading the word of Allah. The video, supposedly created by a Muslim group in the Balkans (specifically Bosnia according to the OP) has been roughly translated by some random posters, but we're not sure how accurate those translations are.

The google-translate version of the video description is as follows:

"© COPYRIGHT PorukaMira © first Islamic cartoon produced PorukaMira multimedia YT channel. Something completely new Balkan missionary scene. Cartoon of full production of our channels. Here is what one anon says the audio contains, note it is incomplete:

Now that ponies are associated with islamic missionaries, we're sure it will not be long until they are condemned as a "radicalizing cartoon" and banned from all good christian television networks. Welcome to the watch list!

3-year-old Parseltongue child teaches 8 foot python about My Little Pony

A 3 year old girl, suspected of being a Parselmouth and the "True Heir of Slytherine", has begun to spread the magic of friendship to the snakes. The toddler, seen here, was found by her mother to be playing ponies with the family's 8-foot-long Reticulated Python in their suburban home. It is unclear at this time, if the reptile prefers Twilight Sparkle with or without her wings, or if he likes Fluttershy more in general.

The owner of the Youtube channel "Edness Taoka", has this to say:

"Snakes are not blood thirsty monsters. They are wrongly portrayed by the media to cause panic and paranoia. These videos highlight the extremely placid nature of what actually happens looking after well kept reptiles in a domestic setting."

How wrong that statement is, has yet to be seen, however additional footage shows the child total badass playing with the 8 foot Cretaceous-period predator with a purple plastic pony and tickling it with her fingers.

It is suspected that the child is good friends with the other little girl who opened the door to Equestria with the satanic ritual in 2014.

At press time the child has opened  a door in the family's bathroom, upon receiving instructions in some old diary she found.

Rolling Pone: An Interview on Pony Convention Finances and Doubtful Allegations
By Foal Duke, International Affairs Correspondent

Allegations of scamming at BUCK thrown into disarray... Allegations of financial mistakes more doubtful... We talk con finance... A lesson for the readers: speculation’s fine but don’t assume shit...

With the beginning of the last BUCK, or British pony convention (apart from Bronyscot, which exists in a far nicer part of the country), the biggest convention in Europe is under way. Ever since the shock revelation in the press release a month or so ago at the time of publishing, I’d been ruminating on just how one could run a convention in an atmosphere that – at least according to BUCK’s managers – hasn’t really changed much from the days Henry VIII started taxing beards to pay for his wars and decapitation fetish.

I was lucky, for various reasons, to run into an associate of mine whilst fucking around on this side of the Atlantic. This associate just so happened to work in event organisation for various comic conventions around the U.K. as part of his job, employed by a certain television network to hire writers, voice actors and so on to appear at their convention panels. We’ll call him Riley Escobar for confidentiality reasons. Whilst travelling via those rotten railbound coffins that exist as the ghost of National Rail, Riley and I got down to discussing the situation. We analysed some of the content of the press release, which I intend to address fully at some point in the near future.

Riley first laid out to me the difference between one of his conventions and something like BUCK. For a television studio, it is far easier to hire out voice actors and writers to come to their panels, as their VAs have a certain number of contractually obligated appearances per year. So, they don’t get paid, but their expenses do get covered. However, BUCK has no such contracts, being a private convention, so they have to pay for the guests themselves.

As for signing sessions – again, the actors at a major con don’t get paid by their parent network, due to contractual obligations / their expenses being paid. At BUCK, of course, the staff needs to find a way of paying for the expense of hauling Larson and his reserve wings out across the Atlantic.

On top of this, the TV network in question is a for-profit, so it can afford to keep some of the money back to make a profit on top of the expenses (and even afford charging for signings). BUCK, obviously, is not that large, so it has to charge – and as a non-profit, has to put that money towards the VA’s expenses, the fund for next year’s con, or the charity bin, otherwise they’d have to give the guests some of that ca$h too.

Although, you’d think it possible, as £20 a signing amounts to $5732.81 in our monopoly money.

Money Money Money: Voice Actors Costlier than Writers, Priorities Depend on Fame.

As the train stopped once, a very large bald man with a head like a pumpkin sauntered onto the train with his baboon of a girlfriend and a pit bull terrier that looked more like a bulldog that had its face caved in with a shovel. Unfortunately, it hadn’t. I mentioned to Riley how strange it was that BUCK generally would not hire voice actors – or, it wouldn’t be very likely, as a convention source kindly informed me at our Season 5 Finale meetup – and then went and hired Peter “Apple Blossom” New. This led Riley opining that, on balance, Peter “Chief Horsebando” New is known for his personality and quite funny, so it would make sense to hire him as he can provide more entertainment in panels and what have you, like Tabitha St. Germain.

Generally there is less to learn from with voice actors – their trade is interesting, but writers have far more varied experiences to one another than the voice actors, so there is more to learn and advise at the technical workshops, one of BUCK’s big strengths.

As he mentions this, I notice a warm sensation on and behind me – Skinhead Q. Fuckwit’s shaved badger has taken a piss up my leg and my precious Wal-Mart bike. I casually continue talking with Riley as I watch the dog trot back over to its master, and grip the Bowie knife in my pocket in rage.

This led us to discuss the cost of hiring voice actors against writers. It’s all about priorities, Riley states: for example, Sean Astin, a voice actor who starred as Samwise in Lord of the Rings and is currently voicing Raphael in the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may be more widely known and famous in the general public, but his main credit was a trilogy of films that ended over a decade ago; whereas, Seth Green also stars in the new series of TMNT, but is also more prominent in the circles of people that attend conventions (dedicated fans, animation hobbyists, webcomic authors, our wonderful readers who love to donate to us, etc.) as he has appeared in far more cartoons, things which these people will be familiar with (such as Family Guy), and TMNT is still active right now. So, they’d be more likely to choose him for his greater appeal to the main attendee group.

Riley has found that a VA generally costs around £10,000.

Riley says that writers, on the other hand, cost more around £5,000 and make fewer requests, partly because VAs can have more leverage, especially if they are well known in the field, such as Tara “Your Waifu” Strong. Writers generally tend to settle for business class flights and a decent hotel, rather than the swank. Basically, anything other than the local BnBs – again, this is common sense.

I converse casually as I walk over to Puppy on the far seats, shaking with the dilapidated train and scratching my inside leg with the knife as I do. I bite my lip, my anger growing.

One thing that really caught my attention in the press release from BUCK is the claim that there simply isn’t a market for this sort of event in the UK. Naturally, I was skeptical, and taking a methodical approach, I wondered why it seems to work with another form of convention with equally limited appeal that was very comparable and would work as a test case – furries.

Riley pointed out that furry cons have a more diverse array of content than the show – there are webcomics, bits of animation, that sort of thing, and many VIP guests are well known in other areas of the creative industry, so they can being in a wide range of content from across more genres, and thus command the appeal to bring in more attendees from the furry base (perhaps it attracts more sponsors too?). Furthermore, when the show finishes the fandom will be less likely to have these large conventions, as fans and creators get involved in other additional fandoms and focus more effort on them, leaving less time and effort for them to do much more than watch the show and maybe attend the weekly local meet-ups (which will hopefully then have become lifelong friends).

I ponder this as I produce the blade from my pocket in front of Fatso and Pooch.

This is something I’m still skeptical of, even as I write this, because I always felt that the majority of furry convention VIPs are from within the furry fandom (and it has just occurred to me that we may be seeing a move to wider ‘internet/alternate culture’ conventions that are mostly or partly pony – one hopes mostly – similar to how furry conventions started out as part of a science fiction convention and blossomed, but in reverse, and have you ever heard such a cringe-inducing term as ‘internet culture’?). Nevertheless, it’s still something to look at if you’re thinking of running a con.

And to add to my scepticism: so we have a TV show that has limited appeal, with a fandom that hosts sizeable conventions and by rights, ought to die with it, rather than continuing onto the Next Generation of the franchise.

Star Trek, anyone?

As for the other UK pony convention I asked Riley about, UK Ponycon, which serves as another test case, this is more an all-ages convention that appeals to all generations of the franchise, so it is not quite the same and may have other reasons to be more enduring – I ponder its decade-plus longevity as I lift up Poochy’s leg with the blade in hand.

This is something I will inquire about further. Watch this space.

I Want to Cum Inside Event City (Disclaimer: Figures Not Exact)

Another thing that has always been an issue with BUCK is the venue size – claims of ‘mismanagement’ or the ‘stage being too big’ about Buck 2014 (the second one I’m inclined to agree with) from the attendees got me mulling this over. Riley states that with a con increasing in popularity, there will inevitable be a shortage of tickets, then complaints, and then demand to move to a larger venue. But, going from around 800 at the con’s first hotel venue to the next year’s 1200 requires a jump to a larger venue such as Event City, which is for hosting far more people than 1200 – and therefore far more expensive. There is no inbetween.

Another potential test case – the amazing Galacon, in Germany – is comparable for its location at the Forum am Schlosspark in Ludwigsburg. The venue seemed to have the same sort of theatre-seating room arrangements and capacity, but was a ton cheaper than what you’d have to pay on Airstrip One. And it was quite far out from the nearest urban centre, rather than slap bang in the middle.

Riley pointed out that in Germany, the train links are more direct, running straight through from France and the rest of Germany, and from Russia – especially Russia! – and Italy and other surrounding countries. So fans have an easier time getting there, instead of having to go to London and take the Tube of Death to another station and sit on an overcrowded coffin all the way from there to Manchester. I don’t personally see how that’s much of an issue, myself.

Riley states that it is likely also cheaper in Europe, especially flying guests in – flying them from the East Coast, though, is a lot cheaper than the West Coast, due to mileage and other things. There is also the possibility of there being a bigger con culture in Germany.

To be fair to Riley, he says he is not sure, and emphasises that really, you’d have to ask the staff at conventions in Germany for this – it’s a whole different ball game, he says.

THE FINALE: BUCK’s allegations of bad money handling are probably wrong.

As we part, I start what this has all been leading up to: I tell him about the allegations of poor financial management – and worse, misconduct – that have popped up once or twice at BUCK.

“These are based on the fact that their hiring costs, ticket prices, and debt don’t seem to match up, at least to the naked eye. Do you think the discrepancies are justified and above board?”

He pauses in thought.

Only the sound of the tannoy is heard.

The train stops at my station.

He proffers a disclaimer: “I don’t have access to BUCK’s accounts, obviously, so I won’t know precisely how good a job they did.”

“I’ll bear that in mind.”
But from my job experience, I’d wage the ‘discrepancies’ make sense. No scams or mistakes.”

And with that, we make our goodbyes, and I lug my shitty vehicle off the train with a Bowie knife in one hand and a pair of pit bull testicles in the other.

Afterword

So there you have it, folks! It is very likely the allegations of scamming were just that: allegations.

(Like they were in any way believable).

HOWEVER, while allegations of financial mistakes also seem more doubtable now, I’m not entirely sure, because as a journalist, second and third opinions are always needed, I need to find out more information, and admittedly I’m biased, as I’m pissed at this happening. BUCK was always a good con, and you can’t help try and look for someone to blame. Just make sure there IS someone first.

What do you think? How similar is Galacon to BUCK? Are furry conventions? Do you live in Germany, and if so, what is the convention culture like? Let us know in the comments.
