Brony "Analyst" ToonKriticY2K Allegedly Solicits Sexual RP and Photos from Minor

ToonKriticY2K, a self-described pedophile (as seen in screenshots in this article), was recently caught apparently grooming a 14 year old girl in a series of erotic role plays.  Over 500 screen caps of Skype conversations spanning a period of 13 months were recently released, detailing his relationship with the pubescent girl.

These allegations came to light recently in a video released by brony drama enthusiast Vida.  Some of the more damning screenshots are below, along with the video and a link to an archive of all the screenshots.

UPDATE: Video released of ToonKriticY2K's friends asking him to turn himself in to the police: (Mirror)

ToonKriticY2K (also know as CarToonZ, his edgy alter-ego) began his relationship by offering to teach the victim "a thing or two" about "lewd RPs" while being concerned she not "think [he's] a pedo or anything like that."  Yeah, we're all buying this, right?  They then began a quite steamy RP where they played themselves and, well, OwO what's this?  Yep, there was a bulge.

Over the next 13 months, the two had quite a few erotic role play adventures, most of which appear to be documented in the group of 500+ screenshots.  ToonKriticY2K continued to groom the victim until she finally apparently began to fall for him.  They began talking about meeting up in real life at a convention, sharing a hotel room, making out in their underwear together, and re-enacting some of their ERP sessions in person.

Before any of this could happen, though, he eventually realized what he was doing was wrong and ended their RP sessions stating, "Up until recently I thought this was just for fun but then I realized, I'm doing this with a 15 year old."  Oops, better late than never, right?

The victim then apparently released the screenshots.  We've also heard rumors that others within their circle of friends may have been aware of the depth and depravity of their debauchery but remained mum.

UPDATE: There's a new thread on the Kiwi Farms.

"Please don't think I'm a creep or anything"

"[Y]ou should find someone your own age and not a pedophile lol"

Do you want to RP?

"Would you like to do a lewd RP with me?"
"I wouldn't want you to think [...] I'm a pedo or anything [...]"
Victim: "[W]ho will we roleplay as?"
TK: "[A]s eachother [sic]"
Enter "the bulge" OwO
PedoCriticY2K sends her actual pornography
"I'm sure youre [sic] like a B cup since youre [sic] so young XD"
The victim confirms her age of 14
"Your [sic] still a decade older than me"
"Is it weird I'm attracted to you?" Uhhh, yes, yes, it is.
"[I]t's just so exciting knowing you're...barely legal..."

Pedophile's guide to grooming

"I want you to know this is all okay and I want to help you understand all this."
"I'm attracted emotionally, romantically, and sexually to you."

"I feel bad for playing with you.  I thought you were 16, this feels even more awkward at 14...[do] you want to do something? nudge"
"If I could live on my own [...] would ya live with me?"
"I'm no cradle robber...buuuuttt...snickers" News flash: You are
"ya know sex is a good stress reliever"
"I think it'd be pretty interesting having you all to myself in a hotel room"
What would you do in the hotel room?  "Imagine the RPs we've done"
"I'd be half tempted to make out with you in just our underwearrrr"
"I worry I make you uncomfortable."  This is making me uncomfortable.
"If other people knew about what we did though, I think that's when I'd get worried [...]"
"My dirty little secret~"
"[...] I realized, I'm doing this with a 15 year old."  Only took a year for him to figure it out.

Soliciting for underwear pics

"I'm very proud of you. [...] Would you ever consider modeling?"
"I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable [about] modeling in underwear"
"I think it would be interesting [to see you try modeling underwear.] Private, I mean."
"You'd have nothing to lose."
"And boy would I like to analyze more~"
"Last thing I want is to be called a pedo."

Letters to the Editor: Details emerge about ToonKriticY2K's past actions

The following post contains an unedited letter sent to the Horse News staff, from a reader named Massiker Mollie in response to recently publicized information regarding the alleged actions of ToonKriticY2K. The views and information provided are not necessarily those of Horse News, and have not been independently verified.  If you have a message to share, send it to horsenewsmlp@gmail.com

In the hours since the information and details about the actions of ToonKriticY2K were revealed to the public, there have been several accounts and comments from others who claim to have been involved with him, attesting to his alleged behavior in the past. Among them is a recount of an experience dubbed "Abby's Story", which is given by Youtube user Cavatina, involving a personal friend.

Another comes in the form of a Youtube comment on Vida's video outlining the event by a user named PurpleRoselyn who claims their friend had been "groped by him at a con". It is unclear at this time how many others will come forward with their own accounts in the coming days, but there is one account that was sent to us from a Youtube user named Massiker Mollie who had been in a "rocky relationship" with ToonKritic for several years.

Below, is her unedited letter (only altered spacing for formatting purposes).

"My experiences with ToonKritic have been a very rocky relationship to say the least. Both of us got along great in September of 2014 and from then till summer of 2015 have been a rocky relationship. At the time of a few months into 2015 he and I chatted on skype on occasions, but it wasn't until I was aware of how...sleazy he was during the late spring early summer of 2015.
I even remember this to this day: I was in a livestream with Toon, Thespio, Jasper Pie, his old buddy Flamez, Eliyora, and Aeon and Eli was playing FFVII and we were all goofing off in the stream, and it wasn't until during that stream that things between me and Toon got...weird..
.
During the stream, we were joking around about sex talk and normal convos, and as a joke, I shook my fully clothed ass at the camera, everyone cracked up, they found it funny, the Toon shook his ass at the stream (clothed as well) and we were laughing as well. It wasn't till midway in the stream that I got private PMs from Toon complimenting on hos nice my ass looked, and even said "I heard from a sourse that you like me or something?", which  did at the time. And I told him that while it was true, I was being respectful of the fact he was in a relationship with Eli. Then he pulls me into a private call and was saying that he loved Kat but he wasn't getting the sex he wanted so he had asked if I was going to BC that year and if so... did me and him want to have sex. I blindingly said sure, but I wanted to be respectful that I didn't want him and Eli to break up. So in call, he had asked to see what I looked like on camera, the he asked to see what I looked like naked, and I'll admit, it wasn't smart at the time... that was when now I noticed it was a red flag that was doing that while in a relationship.  looking on it now I wish I hadn't done so'
This continued were we would occasionally do ERPs every so often and I was added into the Domain for a while, and introduced me to his friends. During that time I was in there he had mentioned how he was insanely attracted to me, and had said what he wanted to do with me in the hotel room at cons, and would persist on the idea of us being together. It wasn't until he and Eli broke up that soon my time in the Domain was up. He chucked me out and ended up accusing me of his and Eli's breakup. When I tried to explain my side of it, he wouldn't listen. It wasn't till after BC 2015 he messages me out of the blue and apologized for how he acted and asked if we could start over, which I said yes. And from then in private PMs he and did ERPs every now and then, him occasionally asking for pics of me naked, with bra and panties, and one with stockings.  I sent him those and he sent me a few pics of himself nakedn and we did voice calls of us naked... after awhile, he was dating his old friend Schane and he said that we needed to break it off. And then afterwards (pastel, twist, and season know this) that started the hate boner of me and toon going back and forth of us hating each other
I was even in the skype call where he had asked Fallenwish to pay for her coming to Ciderfest a few years ago. And I was against him when he had commited fraud for stealing $700 from Fallen
It wasn't until around BC 2016 that me and toon were cool, but then it got bad when he called me a "psycho cyberstalker" that wanted to get in his pants, and had his friends, who I was cool with at the time, turn on me and point me out for stalking and harassing him at cons.
After that around September of 2016 that we made up and were on good terms and were able to put the issues behind us. He and I went into our usual ERP convos, and he had said again how attracted he was of me, what he would do to me in his bedroom, and asked if I was attending whinnycity ponycon with him last year. I ended up going to the con, that's where I met Watchful, Razor Reviews, and Toons BF at the time Mo. AT the time, you guys knew I was with my BF at the time Seth, so both of us were in relationships but Toon considered us "friends with benefits" at the time.
I'm not proud for what I did at whinnycity at the time... I completely regret it because Seth was better... but Toon had sex with me at whinnycity while under his BF's nose, and his bf never caught wind of it at all. At the time that happened I enjoyed it, but looking on it now... I regret doing so with him. After that he and I occasionally chatted and did more ERPs and had asked if I wanted to have sex with him again at BC last year. And he ended up snubbing me during the time. And while that was happening I was full of guilt because this was when I had broken up with Seth because I felt "something was in the way" (which was toon, weaseling his way into mine and seth's relationship) and I had hoped BC would be fun to hang out with everyone, and have a great weekend. For those that were at BC, I'm sure y'all noticed how irritable and snappy I was at you guys, and it was due to me wanting to spend time with Toon, but not having the chance because we were always busy. It wasn't till the last day of the con, Toon came into my hotel room where me and my roomies were chilling out, and he had apologized for not spending time with me.  I forgave him for that then we said our goodbyes and we left
After BC that's when things took a turn for the worst. After BC, I had confided in Fallen that I did want to try dating him, and that she was encouraging me to, and the rest of you guys were throwing the redflags of saying "don't do this""he's bad news" and I didn't listen because I was blinded by lust I had for him. I was going to go to Ciderfest for my bday and he had pmed me if I was going, what I wanted to do for my birthday while there, and he wanted to "make up" for not spending time with me at BC. But then the allegations of me being a "cyberstalker" came up again and had caused him to back off and ditch me. He said he was not interested and he would be frowned upon by his friends in the Domain if he dated me. That's where the final straw hit for me because that was when I was questioning all his motives, whe he was doing that to me, and keep in mind guys, I was his "rebound girl": his puppet, someone to fall back on when his relationships failed. That was all I was to him for 4 years I was his main "side-chick" for his failed relationships. He got rid of me and disposed of me like I was a fucking tissue
I have helped him with more situations than one. I was his meatshield, like how Pastel was to Fallen. I protected him from getting hit, I helped him with his funds on his family car, grandpa's surgery, his house bills, I helped his depression and anxiety, and he had the nerve, the GODDAMN GALL to cast me aside and not even care about what I did to help him
And it had me thinking that he never cared about any of the people he got with. He never liked any of them. He was looking for a quick thrill, and once that happened he threw them away like yesterday's garbage.
I've seen his true colors before, but now seeing this... it honestly makes me wonder why I was attracted to a weaseling, conniving, piece of shit in the first place...He was a person I considered my friend. I was one of his regular Patron on his Patreon, and was actually a descent guy back in 2015. But after that, he completely changed
I tried to reason with him on some stuff he did wrong and I got through to him once ort twice, but he didn't want to hear my advice on it this time" - Massiker Mollie

Friendship is Magic fans angered by new song about the Magic of Friendship

$

Yesterday, Hasbro posted a Music Video from Season 8 on their official Youtube channel, featuring a song called "Friendship Always Wins". It was clearly put up by mistake as it was scrubbed from the official channel, and any re-uploads were struck down for copyright infringement. The video shows the students at the upcoming Friendship school and how they come from all the different lands and friendly sentient races that have been shown in the show thusfar.

This of course, pissed off a lot of people.

The show called "Friendship is Magic" has spent the last several seasons world-building, with the main characters building alliances and friendships with all manner of different species of creatures, from Dragons to Changelings, Yaks to Griffons, and even Hippogriffs in the theatrical film. Twilight, as fans now know, was originally envisioned as being a sort of successor to Celestia at the school for magic, and has been sharing her knowledge on the subject of friendship with all who will listen for many years now.

All of this is completely meaningless however, because it is the current year, and everything must relate to the current President of the United States, and therefore a song about friendship in a show about magical ponies MUST be political in nature. Many anonymous posters took to /mlp/ to speak out against what they saw as a slight against the strong anti-liberal conservative values that the show was apparently founded upon.

Others were less convinced.

We now return you to your never ending cesspool of inescapable political turmoil and misery, and your stream of child-predator-apologist tweets, already in progress.

The following post contains an open message sent to the Horse News staff, compiled from the twitter account of a reader named PeachyFennec in response to recently publicized information regarding the alleged actions of ToonKriticY2K. In the days following the public allegations against ToonKriticY2K, more and more people have come forward to share their own experiences, and detail a pattern of his alleged behavior, going back years. Today, another victim who goes by the screenname @fennec_peachy has contacted Horse News, with their own intimate story about ToonKritic's past behavior. These public messages include allegations that ToonKriticY2K solicited "nudes" of the victim - who was reportedly a minor, under the age of 18 at time.

For ease of reading, we have compiled the individual tweets below, originally posted to this twitter thread: https://twitter.com/fennec_peachy/status/958595996753301504

Here are over 110 videos in response to ToonGate

From Peachy Fennec:

"Thread warning: This is a serious twitter thread about pedophilia and abuse
Okay, so what can I say about @ToonKriticY2K, well lets see, maybe that he made my teen years a living hell? That he manipulated the people he claimed he loved? Lets start at the beginning.
I met him through a few friends and to be honest i met some great friends that i still talk and love to this day from being in his group, but it wasn't long before he'd hit on me constantly and ask my partner at the time for nudes of me which, at the time contained a 17 y/o me.
He'd hurt the people he loved, he claimed he loved me as a brother yet hurt me as if I was an enemy, aside from numerous hurtful jokes he also asked a later partner of mine for nude pics while I was in a closed relationship with her and later asked another partner if they rp'd.
As the years went on i became more and more sick of his antics which he would blame on his autism a LOT, which was odd because most the people in that group were also autistic. I lost my father around my first year of highschool and thats about when I had enough of him.
While dealing with grief i had to deal with him hitting on my girlfriend at the time while he neglected his, she'd always come to me because he'd manipulate her feelings and god i just got so pissed at him at that point, I broke contact with him not long after.
Despite his actions almost driving me to suicide several times, i never wished anything wrong to happen to him, i kept my mouth shut about his abuse while his "career" grew on youtube, afraid of coming off as petty or even seen as the bad guy.
I feel deeply for others who have been affected by him and id love to lend an ear to others who had the misfortune of dealing with him. I know im far from the worst case but I wanted people to know that ANYONE can be manipulated and almost driven to death.
I doubt you're reading this, but Zack, you made my life hell despite you seeing me as a "brother". I held this all in because i KNEW FOR A FACT you would try to paint yourself as a victim, you make me sick. You don't deserve the fame or friends you had, the opportunities you had.
please, if you're a victim and need someone to talk to im always open to talk to anyone. Please take care and im sorry for this serious post on this mostly light hearted twitter page but this needed to be said.
If anyone has any questions regarding my statements about @ToonKriticY2k then please either contact me via telegram (https://t.me/PeachyFennec ) or by twitter DMs"

Rare Piece of Pony History appears on eBay

So we almost never talk about previous generations of pastel horses, much less the toylines that accompanied them, but this is unique. An ebay listing has appeared for a rather interesting piece of pony history - the original wax sculpt prototype for the Generation 2 ponies from Hasbro/Kenner.

Basically, this was the original mold, that every single pony toy from that era was created from.
Not something you see every day.
Here's the description of the listing

"This item was acquired directly from a former employee of the company.  It has never been offered for sale before and is being offered here for the very first time.
Included is the original wax sculpt for a G2 pony.  A wax sculpt is the very first 3D representation of the figure and it is the only master that is used for every single figure sold all over the planet.   Only one original wax is created per character. This example was created by a sculptor and from this, eventually steel tooling would be made that would produce millions of these figures.  This wax sculpt is the original prototype that every figure was created from.  In terms of collecting, wax sculpts are considered "holy grails" among collectors.  Waxes never turn up for sale and when purchased, rarely pop up again.  This piece represents an amazing opportunity to add a genuine, vintage wax sculpt of a G2 Pony to your collection. Also included is a prototype, urethane hard copy. Opportunities like this rarely surface on the public market. This is the first time this is being offered for sale, this has never been sold before or traded among retail stores, collectors, dealers or auctions. Very rare, original vintage Kenner/Hasbro items never surface on the market making this piece highly sought after by intent collectors."
https://www.ebay.com/itm/My-Little-Pony-G2-Hasbro-Kenner-1997-Prototype-Wax-Sculpt-Rare-Hard-Copy/142645906920?

For $650, it could be yours, and you could make your entire own line of bootleg Gen 2 ponies.
Or, you could hot-glue it, which would be like hot-gluing an entire generation.

Whichever is fine.

Cringe Corner: A stalker brony named "Stalker" - Lightning Stalker / Neon Notes threatening / harassing people

$

If you agree to be his boyfriend, he'll make you some sandwiches.

As the community continues to wrestle with the fallout of ToonGate, another contender for creepiest Cringe Corner character has crawled out of the shadows onto everyone's twitter feeds. A stalker, who literally goes by the name "Lightning Stalker" (along withseveralotheraliases) has been showing off his skills as a true pickup artist....by literally messaging HUNDREDS of twitter users, and asking "can I be your boyfriend"?

But it doesn't stop there.

Lightning Stalker - currently going by the handle of "Dark Storm" (because "stalker" wasn't quite edgy enough for this casanova) and "Neon Notes" - first showed up on our radar when he approached a friend with his trademark pick-up line "Can I be your boyfriend?"
As cringey as that is, we're well used to seeing desperate, completely oblivious, and otherwise unstable horny bronies all the time.

If there are ever any "Hot" singles in your area, you should probably ask WHY they're single.

It wasn't until he was reported to us as allegedly having threatened a person's girlfriend over private message that prompted us to look deeper....and discover he is the Jose Mendoza of digital dating.

Publicly, he is notorious for demanding the attention and affection of any account that happens to respond to his carpet-bombing approach to Erotic Role Play.

By which we mean, he literally messages every pony-related account he seems to encounter on Twitter with this pickup-line: "Hi".

This happens on ALL of his currently active accounts (other ones he links to have been suspended by Twitter, hard to guess why).

No, seriously, there are HUNDREDS of these.

When "Hi" doesn't work, he resorts directly to requesting to be refollowed, so that he can get down to his real intentions: getting that sweet, sweet, cyber sex.

Or, doing...whatever this is.

At one point, he actually tried to seduce an eBooks chat bot, completely unaware that there was nobody on the other end of the line.

This went on a looong time.

Now, I know what you're thinking;
"sure he's a creepy desperate idiot, but has he actually done anything?"
I'm glad you asked!

The answer, as it seems, is "Yes! He threatens the people who get creeped out by him!"

For those of you who can't read it, a twitter user named DoublePlay caught Stalker threatening someone close to him using the "NeonNotes" account.

Stalker's Defense?

"I am hardly on that account, so I didn't threaten your girl."

He then repeatedly claims to be telling the truth.

Then when confronted with the easily retrievable chatlogs, he just says "I stopped messaging her."

"JUST LET ME BE YOUR BOYFRIEND AND I WILL STOP ASKING"

That's totally a rational message to send a total stranger on the Internet. This will definitely get you laid and not under investigation for sexual harassment.

Other users have made mention that he approaches people without regard to their real life age, when seeking out these erotic role play / relationship partners (which is believable given the sheer number of solicitations he has made over the last several months).

It was after this, that one twitter user involved contacted filed a police report about Lightning Stalker's behavior, and even posted screenshots to prove it. We're unsure how effective this will be, considering all signs point to him being Australian (those damn Aussies again).

These are not isolated incidents.
Not by a longshot.

Honestly, there's so much here, that we're just going to post all the screencaps we have.

"Recent: Big Boobs"
Quality search history right there.

"No" means "ask at least 4 more times".

But that's not all!

PLOT TWIST:
He's not even some edgy idiot 12 year old like people expected

Which means to ALL the people who WERE sexting this guy before then, congratulations! You were sexting a minor! Welcome to the ToonKritic Club!

Tough Break Sophia

By now, it is very likely that he has turned 18, or will be soon, but his short-fused ill-tempered unstable behavior has shown no signs of improvement. If approached by his accounts, it is likely in your best interest to ignore him. OR, send us screencaps. Either is fine.

UPDATE: We have an age and a photo
He claims to be 18 now.

Wait, shit that's Thurman Merman

THIS is Neon Notes / Lightning Stalker

Tonight you get double-teamed by high impact simulated violence.
Word on the street is that there are a pair of pony-related pummelings that are poised to premiere in the near future; Them's Fightin Herds and Death Battle.

The first bit of news comes from Mane 6 - the guys who have been....working?....for years now, on completing the spiritual successor to Fighting is Magic, which is called Them's Fightin Herds. For those who don't know because you're all so new you never even heard of Herds, it's a fighting game featuring characters created by Mama Lauren Faust herself.

The game is set to finally drop on Steam on February 22.

The other piece of news comes from the ScrewAttack forums, where a piece of information has been floating around, that the next Death Battle will feature a Tara Strong double-feature - Raven from the Teen Titans, versus Book HorsePurple SmartMary SueWorst Pony Twilight Sparkle.

This would be the third time ponies have been featured on Death Battle.

Brony Analyst / Apsiring Voice Actor named "Performance Major" admits to ERPing with Underageb&

Not long after the whole ToonKriticY2K drama that has been going on for a while, with still blurry details about whether justice has been served (it hasn't), and a plethora of apologists from the Analysis Community, another such person has come out of the woodwork and admits he also wanted a piece of that underage titty.

Recently Performance Major [Youtube Channel], a brony trying to make it into the Brony Analysis Community and Voice Acting scene, has come out of the woodwork and admitted he has, like ToonKriticY2K, engaged in Erotic Role-Play (ERP) with minors over the internet.

We now have the full video down below. Confession is about seven minutes in.

Of course, what would the internet be without people actually defending a fucking pedophile on it? This one, TrueSailorComet, got into an argument with WubCake over whether the fandom in general should know about these types of people.

Totally the face of calm, rational discussion.

The tweets sent out by TrueSailorComet have since been deleted, and Performance Major has stated he will go into therapy for this.

We'll be keeping an eye on the situation as it develops.
Edit: Fixed the title to reflect that, while Performance Major is a part of the analysis community, his schtick is voice acting.

Cringe Corner: The Audiowave Dasher's Years of Harassment Megapost

$
0
0

It's a new year and once again, the easily triggered wannabe Brony Musician known as AudioWave Dasher / Ben Jackson / TheGreatTailz / Aeons And Airwaves is back again on his campaign of harassment.
Who the hell is this guy?

Ben Jackson, a 41 year old man based out of Orlando, Florida is a guitarist going by many different fandom names, namely AudioWave Dasher (among others) with a huge ego problem and horrible guitar sound quality who essentially thinks his shit does not stink and will not hear a word against it. He first came to our attention around August 2015, when he spammed various Facebook groups to promote his music, and more importantly, after having his incessant requests denied by them, asking the people there to send emails to Equestria Daily, wanting to "bad mouth them in a positive manner" so that they will supposedly give new artists a chance at the spotlight.

Holding himself as a professional musician and praising guitar playing above all other instruments, it's a bit odd that a good chunk of his recordings and so-called original songs are not actually played on a guitar, rather recorded instead via Guitar Pro 3, a computer program that produces MIDI tracks meant for tabs and for guitarists to play along to as practice. Instead, he uses those MIDI tracks as completed songs, in a claim that once he manages to harass other musicians into doing a collaberation with him for the drum, bass and vocal tracks, he will then re-record it.

Going through his other channels, it's obvious he has done the same. As such, when other people find his music, they tend to leave advice for him in the comments because his tone is pretty awful. However, Ben is not the type of person to take constructive criticism from anyone, because, in his own words, that he has 23 some-odd years of experience playing the guitar, to take criticism from someone who is not a musician is outright laughable and ridiculous. In other words, he claims a person must be able to produce music in a much better fashion than him in order to give him advice. Naturally, what he considers better is entirely subjective, and he has been seen flying off the handle at other musicians who create much better sounding music.

And so for the next few years we diligently covered the tales of Ben as he sent spam to many people in the MLP community in a bid for them to broadcast his music, his self-described way of self promotion, and, should they refuse to play his music due to its terrible quality and his piss poor attitude, pester them with emails and other correspondence chock full of verbal abuse. Enter Stallionslaughter, a much better musician than Ben, who tried to give him advice on how he could improve himself and his guitar sound via a Youtube video. Ben, not wanting his precious self-image ruined by someone he viewed beneath him, proceeded to hound Stallionslaughter's Youtube channel with abusive comments and outright copypasta, which then prompted Stallion, as a joke, to make a deathcore song with lyrics comprised of the comments Ben left behind.

Brutal. However after that whole fiasco, we did not hear from Ben for the entirety of 2017, until he appeared recently, circa January 2018, when he had apparently during that time roped Brony Musician 4EverfreeBrony into doing a collab with him, which takes us to the present.

What has he done now?

Stallion for his part, tried to resolve the situation by bringing all parties involved into a call and sort things out. What happened afterward was a whole night's worth of burning, not unlike our very own sun.

And then he flipped out. From claiming he's a Navy Seal and threatening bodily harm...

To making racial slurs...

To making even more threats...

When called out on buying said subs, his response was just as predictable: denial.

No real surprise there.

After days of posting on Twitter about all the stuff AWD has said, CrusaderPony decided to set up a petition to warn all MLP conventions about Ben Jackson attending conventions, and suggested he he prematurely banned. The petition was almost a success, acheiving somewhere around 450~ signatures before it was, predictably, took down by Ben, as he report bombed it to death, and bragged about it later over Twitter.

During this time, Ben also decided to target Stallionslaughter directly, doing the unforgivable, actually managing to get him fired from his job working at a car dealership, by spamming them with false reviews and emails, that they decided the best course of action was to "let him go". Unfortunately, this had the effect of having Stallion lose his house due to barely being above water financially, and he ended up losing his house.

The communities response was overwhelming, as a GoFundMe was set up with the goal of $1,000 to get Stallion back on his feet. Of course, Ben couldn't leave well enough alone, and during BABScon weekend it was taken down temporarily due to spam reports from him. In other words, not being content with getting Stallion fired, he wanted to make sure he was kicked while he was down. Luckily, the GFM was able to be restored, and it overshot its goal threefold.

A warning to the rest of the fandom, if you see Ben Jackson / Audiowave Dasher / Aeons and Airwaves / Thegreattailz, or whatever nickname he is going under, our suggestion is to preemptively block him and kick him out from any groups he joins. In order to market himself, as he says in his own words, he especially seeks out Facebook groups who might not otherwise be informed of his doings.

Ask Fluffle Puff comes to an End

In a disappointing, but not unexpected turn of events, the creator of the much-beloved blog "Ask Fluffle Puff" has announced that the series as we know it is coming to a close. In a lengthy blog post, there are details of what is to come next, but that it will not be the same product as before, citing that the creator was stifled and unmotivated by needing to copy and mimic the style and characters of the original show. He also mentions some of the less desirable aspects of the fandom as being a demotivator. You can find all the details below, or over at the post.

We here at Horse News wish him well and look forward to seeing his next project.

The post reads:

"An UpdateI’m sure a lot of you were expecting this, but I think it’s time for this blog to end.
A lot of things have been going on. I won’t bore you with details. It mostly involves severe depression and an existential crisis.
I’ve slowly been putting myself back together.
And now I have so much I want to express.
But I can’t do it with how things are now.
I need to do something new, that’s more my own.
Something that isn’t copying a show.
I’ve always felt held back with copying the show’s style. Eventually, I felt like I hit a wall and couldn’t advance or learn anything else. Like, that was it. What I was doing was the peak of what I could do with that art style. There wasn’t much room to feel motivated when I was staring at a wall.
There were also the thoughts of getting a cease and desist always looming overhead, making me put out even less effort and avoiding anything ambitious. So I’ve been settling for less all this time, just to avoid that. Which only made me feel worse.
There’s a pretty long list of things that chipped away at my interest and enjoyment. But those two and the community are the main three. The community being a very large part and a whole story in itself, which I’m sure a lot of you are painfully aware of by now. The uncountable amount of fake smiles. The sea of lies and cheating. The endless theft and traced artwork. Using ripped or stolen assets out of sheer laziness to do even a shred of work themselves. There are so many big names who genuinely don’t care about their fans and are only using that poor fandom to stroke their ego. I don’t want to be in a community where kindhearted fans are treated like objects and slaves. I don’t want to feel like I’m one of those “big names” who don’t care. I want to work again. To express myself again. If someone wants to follow me, I want to feel like it’s because of my content. Not because I go to conventions, trying to get as much attention as possible for as little work as possible.
In all seriousness, I’m willing to bet that a lot of you reading this right now have done more genuine work in the past year than so many of the people you call “horse famous” will do in their lives. A fandom, especially one supposedly about friendship and kindness and generosity, and full of children no less, should not revolve around selfish, heartless, monsters. I really can’t count the amount of terrible things I’ve see or experienced personally.
So I’m going to move away from all of it.
I need to move away from it.
To start fresh.
Technically, I’m redesigning and reinventing things.
But it’s to the point where it feels pretty new.
It will still be a story about “Fluffle Puff”, but not the pony version you know. Although, she may show up every now and again. I’ve also redesigned “Chryssi” to be more of a unique character. I wanted them to be similar to keep the familiarity of “Fluffle and Chryssi”, but original enough to be their own characters, in their own world, that can stand alone by itself. And hopefully avoid cease and desists.
I’ve been working on this for about a year now, building a new world from the ground up, redesigning characters, and even populating the world. No more ghost town backgrounds. To me, it feels like it’s becoming a completed world. It’s something that’s been in the back of my mind for years, ever since the first EG episode I did.
This story will be told in a more personal way, in a more personal art style I’m much more comfortable with. Just about every episode I’ve written means something to me. They feel pretty similar to the EG episodes. The first three episodes of this new series will be retelling of those, actually.
Those EG episodes meant a lot to me. They came from a very personal place. And it always bothered me that I didn’t do them how I wanted. I rushed them. Took shortcuts. The lack of motivation from everything around me took its toll and I was very lazy. It’s depressing looking at something that came from my life, heart, and emotions, done in such a crappy way. Even more so, seeing how popular those were, and still are after all this time.
But I’m fixing that now. I’m taking my time and going into a lot of detail. More than I probably should. The first three episodes of this new series will be a reboot of an idea I never fully completed. And then from there it’ll start telling a story I’ve been writing for easily 3 years. With an occasional episode of nonsense. I even gave spooky “Big Sis” a bit of a story.
I don’t know how people are going to react to this new series. And to be honest, I kind of don’t care. That might sound harsh, but I’ve always stayed within the lines just to stay relevant. I don’t want to cut myself short anymore. I want to follow what I want to do. I want to be productive again. To express myself and tell my stories, exactly how I imagine them.
If you like the more sincere feeling of the EG episodes, you’ll probably like this new series. I’ve been wanting to do a story like this since nearly the beginning, but I never had the help or resources. I still don’t have a shred of help, but now I feel comfortable enough that I can do it by myself. So I’m going for it. In all seriousness, if I were to have a life goal it would be to do this series.
I know a few of you are really die hard fans of Fluffle Puff, and I’m genuinely sorry. But I just can’t do this specific blog anymore. There are too many limitations and bad memories attached to it. I want the both of us to be free. I can only hope you like the new Fluffle and continue to follow her.
Beyond that, I don’t know when the first episode will be released.
It all started out with a simple idea of doing an EG 4 in a different art style and turned into “Just do it. Do the whole thing. Stop holding yourself back.” I really had no idea it was going to take this long. Then life things piled up, slowing me down more. But things are picking back up and I’m not going to stop now.
So, the time has come. I’m going to be closing questions to this Ask Fluffle Puff blog and concentrate on her new adventure. I’ll still be regularly active on my Twitter, with the usual nonsense and occasional doodle. Which will also be posted to my personal blog. They’re about the only sites I even look at these days. I also have a Discord group I’m on daily. But I won’t be doing anything else until she’s ready for her first episode. Which I will announce pretty much everywhere when it happens. At which point, her Facebook will also be updated to her new appearance.
There will also be an occasional stream of little parts of this new project, but I don’t want to make that public yet. It feels kind of weird concept arting and experimenting while people are watching. It’s not too hard to find my stream profile, though.
In the mean time, if you’re still a patron, I’ll be posting Patreon only screenshots and stuff on occasion, relating to this new series, in hopes to make up for the lack of content.
Otherwise, I’m perfectly okay if you want to move on and find someone else to support. I haven’t done anything in months. I honestly think you should find someone else to support. So if you feel bad about it, please don’t. I’m the one that should, and does, feel bad. You should be getting your money’s worth. And that’s not me right now.
But by the off chance you want to come back, I’ll be announcing on my Twitter, around when the first episode will be coming out. When that will happen, I really can’t say. It could be another half a year. I’m quite literally building an entire world from the ground up, completely by myself.
But whether you stick around or not, I cannot begin to describe how much it meant to me to have genuine fans among the not so fun experiences in the fandom. The community was rough to the point where I considered stopping and just leaving. Quite a few times, if I’m being honest. But a lot of you helped me through it. Whether it was just a genuine message sent directly to me, or you went out of your way to stop me at a convention. I honestly couldn’t handle some of those encounters. Not in a bad way. But more of a “I’ve never had any kind of attention or praise on such a genuine level” kind of way.
I made Fluffle Puff to entertain myself. She was just nonsense in the beginning. Something to fill the time and help get away from a previous blog. A parody of a show I liked. Nothing more. But then she evolved into a way for me to express myself. I never really had friends. I can’t talk easily. I always feel out of place and alone. But she gave me a purpose. She became a part of me and such a large part my life. She helped me through so many of my mental stops and barriers. I felt happy for the first time in my life. And to see her helping others in the way she helps myself cannot be put into words.
And on a personal level, I loved the whole “Fluffle x Chryssi” thing.
Like, so much.
So she’s not going anywhere. I don’t think I’ll ever let her go. She’s just getting a redesign along side me redesigning my own life.
I really can’t wait to start these new episodes.
And I hope everyone likes them.
But if this is the end and you’re going to move on, I’d just like to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for all the years of support and helping me find true happiness.
The next post on this blog will most likely be the last.
And it will be a link to Fluffle Puff’s new life, in her new home."

Billy Bob Thornton is a Brony

Billy Bob Thornton is basically a brony, according to Tara Strong, in the same way that the likes of Patton Oswalt are (they get a pass because they're good dads who spend time with their daughters).
So yeah, that guy who plays the drunk Santa Claus knows just as much about pastel horses as you. So we'll add him to the list that we stopped maintaining about 2 years ago.
You can go back to what you were doing now.

Also, this is actually super old news. But YOU didn't fuckin' know that did you? Maybe now that he's met the staff he'll do a guest voice.

A grizzled, slurred, obscene guest voice.

Actually please make that happen.

GOP Rep from Arizona asks about furries on Twitter; becomes one hours later thanks to Brony artist

A Republican State Representative from Arizona may have set an internet record; going from total obliviousness to full blown furry in under 24 hours. Kelly Townsend, a Representative for Arizona's 16th District since 2013 became entangled in a twitter debate regarding socialism and public education (Arizona public school teachers have been striking recently), when a twitter user named @andreuswolf called her out for getting "logically destroyed by a furry".

In what may go down as the defining moment of her political career, Townsend decided to ask
"please educate me as to what a furry is.".

The fun began immediately.

This request was immediately answered with a deluge of furry pornography, photos of fursuits, links to furry websites, and pictures of dildos, being tweeted to the elected official.

Her lack of understanding was only worsened by a followup tweet, in which she interpreted the response as a threat of some kind.

Dictionary.com attempted to join the fray by providing a real answer.

Eventually, after several hours of non-stop fur-posts, she seemed to understand the fetish world that she had just provoked, and instead of recoiling in terror (as one would expect an elected official to do), she seemed to embrace it (or, got a hip young social media person to take the reins). She asked for her own fursona (after making a shrekpost).

She stipulated that it must be a lioness.

She seemed to be enjoying herself.

Which, here is where the pony-world gets involved (the only reason we would post this on the Horse News site). A horsefan delivered in glorious full-color.

The story doesn't end there, as shortly after receiving her new furry artwork, it became the profile picture for her election campaign page on Facebook.

Not even lying.
Even gave credit for the art.

These are real things that happened.

ILoveKimPossibleAlot Allegedly Harasses Vendors, Attendee at Recent California Brony Convention

The White Knight defends KP’s honor

Two vendors and an attendee report they were harassed by ILoveKimPossibleAlot and her self-described bodyguard and “psi-warrior,” Jack Nolan, at a recent brony convention.  The vendors claim they were targeted for “negative” tweets they sent and the attendee claims they were targeted because they wouldn’t buy her art.  Before we get into their stories, we’ll begin below by reporting on the events that led up to these incidents.

Literally who?

Who Is Jack Nolan?

While you are all likely familiar with ILoveKimPossibleAlot, or KP, you may be unfamiliar with the name Jack Nolan.  That’s okay, we all were.  Jack Wadsworth Nolan, according to his profile on Stage 32, is a 50 year-old actor and author.  He served a commission with the 353rd Research and Analysis Company and the 15th Tactical PSYOP Co.  He’s a member of SAG-AFTRA and has appeared as a background extra in a number of TV shows and movies throughout the years.  He’s written a book entitled, Firewall: The Propagandist’s Guide to Self-Defense.  And he’s also a member of the vaunted brony analysis community under the name Commando Solo.

"Buy my book!"
We’ll get back to Mr. Nolan later, but first let’s hear from his alleged harassment victims.
"I'll pay you in exposure~~"

A Brief Backstory: All About a Tweet

On , ILoveKimPossibleAlot sent a tweet asking for people who were vending at High Roller Pony Con to “split a booth for online/Youtube [sic] promotion of its location.”  She was denied a booth at the convention in question, and, in order to get into the vendor hall, begged a friend to share a table with her.
Clarification/Edit 09. May 2018: we were just informed that she never actually applied for a vendor table at HRPC, and instead had applied for a spot as a Community Guest, but withdrew it after the recent California convention. It would appear she had the intention to either apply for a vendor table, or, do what she did at the California con, in which case was to have a normal attendee badge but "share" a table with someone else.

Here are the three tales of harassment in the victims’ own words.

The First Vendor

So maybe KP puts out her tweet offering to trade exposure for splitting a table at HRPC.  I replied to it saying that she knows tables are expensive and this is a bad deal, warning others not to take it because exposure doesn’t pay.  Normally I wouldn’t give a fuck but with her history of exploiting creators when she is a creator herself has soured my opinion of her.  It’s one thing to just be the “idea guy” and not really have a clue as to how much work creating is, it’s another to know exactly how much work it is but fuck over other creators anyway.  She replied to me saying that she never said she wouldn’t pay for the table (which is technically true but she didn’t make that offer to begin with) and I just blew it off because I stopped caring enough to continue the conversation.  I considered it done.
Jack Nolan or Daddy Derek?
Now at [the convention] I’m setting up my vendor table and have two friends helping me out.  This man who I can only describe as an exact clone of Daddy Derek from Cool Cat and in that same age range [Jack Nolan] approaches me.  I’m not fully awake and super busy so I don’t understand what he’s trying to tell me.  He mumbles something about KP and Twitter.  I give him a look like, “wtf are you talking about?” and he mentions that I spoke to KP on Twitter.  Again, “What?”  He just tells me I need to talk to KP about it.  I thought it was incredibly weird and just went back to set up.

About 20 minutes later KP approaches me and tells me we need to talk.  She then begins to defend herself about this tweet.  I just smiled and played along to make her go away.  I will grant that she was reasonably polite about it?  I just shrugged it off as something, again, really fucking weird but didn’t pay much mind until I found out she had been doing this to other people she had stupid Twitter run-ins with. [...]

I forgot to mention.  Literally the only time I’ve ever spoken to her directly, indirectly, anything at all was that one tweet.  That’s it.  But apparently that was enough to send this grown ass man to me.  Which thinking about it now, KP must’ve told him to look for me because I didn’t know this man at all but he knew my name and what I did to piss KP off.

For the rest of the con I caught glares from KP since I had the misfortune of vending fairly close to her.  I thought I was being paranoid until I asked a buddy who was helping me at the table.  He confirmed [that] I was not being paranoid.

Daddy Derek (as I’m calling him now) [aka Jack Nolan] almost never left KP’s side.  He was like her personal body guard and was the weekend went on it got more and more creepy that a man in his 50s was being the personal bouncer of a girl off pony YouTube.  And yes, he is in his 50s.  We checked.

The Second Vendor

So, HN posted this on their Twitter and I replied with, “Wow, this is kinda fucked.  It’s not that much to split a table.”  That was it.  I didn’t think much of it at the time and I almost forgot I even tweeted it.  morning of the con, I was setting up my table and I have a guy [Jack Nolan] come up and tell me to come to KP’s table to talk about something.  Honestly, I was kinda shocked?  I had no idea what she wanted to talk to me about and I was really confused.  I had no idea KP even knew who I was.  (I did one drawing for her channel a few years ago but nothing that she would remember me by.  I’m sure it was her staff or something who asked for the art anyway.  They asked me if I could make them more but I just never responded since they seemed unprofessional and unappreciative of the free work.  This was before [the] KP leak thing happened and I did lots of art for pony YouTubers at the time so I didn’t think much of it.)  I asked him what about, and he said, “Some tweet you made about High Roller Ponycon.”  I was surprised she even remembered that tweet, or that she went out of the way to look at Horse News’s Twitter, find me in the mentions, and decide to come find me at the con.  I just told him, “I don’t want to talk to her,” and he just said okay and left.  I went back to the post and deleted the tweet, because I was worried about drama coming to my table.  (I regret this now obviously.  I never thought this situation would blow up the way it did.)  This was my very first time vending at a convention, the last thing I needed was that.  I wanted her to just leave me alone tbh.  Four hours later, while I was working on a commission, KP came up to my table saying that she wanted to talk to me about the tweet I made.  I just looked at her and said, “I don’t want to talk to you,” she kept asking me, “Why?” and I said, “I really don’t want drama at my table, and I’m working,” and she kept saying, “Why?” with me responding, “I don’t want to talk to you.”  She wouldn’t leave me alone until I said, “I’ll think about it,” and she stormed off.

The Attendee

On of [the convention], I was standing at the booth of Rae Deerwood discussing a commission.  At the time I noticed Jack Nolan standing behind me, but since I did not know who he was, I paid no mind.  I had been counting my money to decide on whether or not to get a commission due to pricing.  As I stepped back to count, Jack approached me and said another vendor was selling $10 headshot commissions.  Naturally because I was getting tight on money at this point, I wanted to know who.  Due to the information about ILoveKPAlot, I had absolutely no interest in even approaching her.  So, after he informed me who it was, I casually and politely told him no, and that I have no interest in meeting or buying from KP.

Later that day, I noticed KP was gone, and as I am a fan of her booth partner’s art, I snuck over to Keyframe Productions’s booth while she was not there and discussed the pony cut out art that was on display.  Ultimately, I politely declined, telling her I would need to count my money again.  I was under the impression that was the last of it.  It was not.

The I was waiting in line to meet WhiteDiamond so I could buy a commission from her, as she is an artist I highly respect and annually get commissions from.  After discussing it, Jack Nolan came up behind me and called my name.  I remember not telling him my name, but he probably saw it on my badge.  He asked if I was still interested in the art, I was a bit confused and stepped to the side to ask him which it was.  Instead of telling me who, he asked me to come with him.  Not wanting to cause a scene I went with him, on guard the entire time.  He went to Keyframe Productions Booth, and KP was sitting there.  At this point I was very confused, both Jack and KP were missing from the booth when I [talked] to Keyframe about her framed art, so there was no way for him to know about it unless she had told him, or he had been watching me.  He stood behind KP, arms crossed as if defending her from some unknown threat, and stared at me as I tried to, twice, decline that I could afford Keyframe’s pricey art.  I was very uncomfortable with the stares both KP and him were giving me, and wanting to just please them so I wouldn’t be bothered again, I bought a $5 print from Keyframe.  KP immediately as soon as I pulled out my wallet started to say something, I believe she was going to try to get me to buy her prints, but I shook my head and turned away.  Walking away with my regretful, and somewhat forced, purchase, I left the booth with her and Jack glaring at me.  They didn’t bother me again for the rest of the con.  However Sunday night I was sitting at the chairs near the escalators with my Celestia KL plush and dozing half asleep.  Jack walks by, watching all the other vendors carrying product, but himself doing nothing to help, and with a slightly uncomfortable look, very passive aggressively saluted at me.  With my extensive history with people in the military, I’m well aware of a proper salute, versus one that’s made as an insult.  Luckily this was my last meeting with him.

The Psi-Warrior Responds

Before we even published this piece, Jack Nolan was kind enough to release a video detailing his job at this convention as “[KP’s] bodyguard.”  He takes credit for “neutralizing 2 of 3 incidents” and goes on a tirade about the “scandal mongering and defamation [that are] more potent than ever,” bemoaning how “no gatekeepers exist to prevent slander and libel from spreading.”

He elaborates on why a warrior such as himself was needed, stating that due to Kim’s “gender and faith, [she] has become a target on all the bad actor’s radars.”  He waxes profusely about how KP is “an earnest and courageous woman, big enough to admit she might have made some errors, but who wants more than anything to live them down and prove herself.”

Unfortunately, the events at the convention profoundly affected Mr. Nolan, as he stated that he “won’t be bodyguarding Kim again, because the responsibility exhausted me.”

Finally, this true white knight tips his fedora and reminds us all that “people with bad intentions actively seek to defame, sabotage, entrap, back-stab, and vilify [your favorite YouTube personalities] to satisfy their malice, their perversity, for a quick buck, or simply for the lols.”

Rolling Pone: Introducing the New San Joaquin Valley Bronies
Introduction to Merced... Some Pointers on Rural Meetup Groups...

By Foal Duke, International Affairs Correspondent, 5th May 2018

Hi readers! So, at BABSCon this year, whilst covering the floor I came across a brand new group of horsepeople from San Joaquin Valley and managed to have a little chat with them and learn what they're all about. As is my style, I managed to get some practical pointers in starting up a new group, so if you're a student in Merced or a rural resident in the San Joaquin Area, or looking to start a group in a rural area, take a look at the interview below, and click after the jump for a transcript.

FoalDuke:
Okay, so do you guys want to tell me a little more about yourselves?

Andrew:
Okay. We are the San Joaquin Valley Bronies, of California, and basically, we represent all the cities in the valley of California, just a little outside of San Francisco where we are now. And we are currently hosting out meetup group at 7 pm at the Hyatt Regency at BABS Con.

FD:
Awesome. OK, so how did you guys get started? How did you meet up at first?

Andrew:
Well, mostly, we're connected by UC Merced which is the University of Merced in California. And we met Ryan, our friend, and a few other people in the Merced area, and we all sort of just culminated in Mercedbecause it's close to all the other cities.

FD:
Of course. So what made you decide to do a meetup group for the middle California area? Considering that San Francisco is nearby?

Andrew:
There wasn't one! Pretty much. We just wanted to make sure that people who were bronies who were kinda disconnected previously, who either didn't really fit in the Bronies of Northern California or Southern California groups [geographically], had a group of their own and didn't have to travel too far. We started off with the My Little Pony Movie at Merced, and got a good showing at that.  And yeah, since then, we've just been growing.

FD:
Awesome, so how many people turn up?

Andrew:
Well,  it depends. If it's at the University, it's mostly students, so... ten, (Sam: fifteen?) around there. We're hoping to do it more in the town, so it's more accessible to people, because parking at the University is a bit of a challenge.

FD:
So, San Joaquin, how big is the area?

Andrew:
Uh, well, it's the entire valley of central California...

FD:
So it's quite a lot?

Andrew:
Yeah, it's mostly rural, but there's a lot of small towns out there that aren't so well known. But really, Ithink it's only about three hours from the Bay Area, so not very far!

FD:
OK, so would that ever be an issue for you guys - for your further members? Commuting in?

Andrew:
If they're commuting up to a large con like this, you'd have to probably carpool, like we did. Otherwise, the whole reason we started this was so that the people living out in that more rural area could come together rather than having to commute all the way to Sacramento or San Francisco. So it actually makes it easier for people.

FD:
Where's the furthest that your members come from?

Andrew (to treasurer): Um, I think... LA!

FD: LA!?

Andrew:
Yeah, but some people come because they have friends or they just want to check out the group and the things we're doing. But most people, they either live or rent in Merced, or they come from neighboring cities.

FD:
So, Merced... do you want to tell us a little more about the town?

Andrew:
Well, um, it's a poor town, but the University was placed there to kind of bring it up in social status. And now it's starting to turn into your typical University town.

Sam:
It's basically a rural farming community.

Andrew:
It's more rural than  people are used to in the Bay Area over here. So you're pretty much right on the farmlands. There's a lot of really great people, and the town is coming up in value.  It's pretty exciting!

FD:
So how often do you guys meet?

Andrew:
Now we're at a club and we meet every two weeks.

FD:
Considering that it's quite rural and the transport links are a little bit stretched...

Andrew:
It depends. In the every-two-weeks group, mostly people from Merced attend that at the University.  It's not very far. But we do bigger ones. We did a group viewing of all of Season 7 recently, so we had people from Sacramento and other places came out. But every two weeks, it's mostly the nearby guys.

FD:
OK, so, do you want to tell us a little more about yourselves and your roles in the group?

Andrew:
We actually do have dedicated club roles... I'm technically the  President.  [To Sam in white] This is my Vice President.

SAM: Hi!

Andrew:
[The guy in green] is our treasurer. And he is a transfer student from Russia. And he's been here for three years now.

Treasurer:
Yeah. This is my third year in the United States, and it's a nice place. I like it.

Andrew:
...And studying Computer Science!

Sam:
I'm studying Chemistry.

Foal Duke:
So how many people do you expect at the larger meets, and how often are the larger meets?

Andrew:
We usually have the larger ones about once a month. We took a little break in the winter, because everyone was off. And then, we'd usually have one this Saturday, but because of the con we took that one off too. But, yeah, once every month we have them meetups.

FD:
So, do you have any advice for people looking to run a meetup group in your particular situation?

Andrew:
If there' not one near you, just start it up yourself.  Bring at the University helped us with having a good location.  But, any public spot, you can host a meetup at.

FD:
But is there anything to watch out for? I mean, specifically in your situation, where it's a bit more rural?

Andrew:
You have to plan these early! And, at least with us with the parking, it's not so great at the school. Make sure your attendees know where to park, especially if it's paid parking; you don't want them getting priced out.

Sam:
Yes, and meetup.com is the site we use to organise it, it's great for exposure.

FD:
And what would you say is the most challenging aspect you've found about starting a group?

Andrew:
Money's a bit of an issue. You have to finance your own thing (the Treasurer waves). Especially when you have a lot of people and you're financing food and things like that. You can try and get that on expenses. Like, we can do it through the University, but if you don't have a net like that, you want to make sure beforehand you have sufficient money.  But yeah, it's really fun, and I recommend you do it yourself.

FD:
Do you guys have any social media?

Andrew:
We just have a Facebook group. I would look up UC Merced Bronies. It'll probably show up on Google. So check us out! We're just starting out, so our search engine optimization's a bit incomplete.

Author's Thoughts

So there you have it! There are plenty of places in most towns to start a meetup group, and in general, commuting isn't much of an issue, even in rural areas with a long train or bus ride. After all, fans are fans, they'll sit on a train for ages to get there**. Just make sure the venue is something that can be accessible to all, friendly towards people in strange costumes with giant soft toys, quiet enough and well-lit enough to try out card and board games if that's your thing, and has the right amount of space for it (if the place usually has a couple of large tables free here or there it's a good sign).

Bonus points if you have some nearby things to try. Merced has a zoo, and also has a fruit barn, a slightly unusual combination of fruit bar and animal sanctuary. There's plenty in the nearby towns too if you want to organise a day trip. After all, you're here to make friends, so you definitely shouldn't restrict yourself to things that are fandom-related.

If you're planning, make sure you've contacted the venue to check prices for table reservations, group deals on meals, parking, etc. and budgeted accordingly, and for any extras they might have like private upstairs rooms. If you're attending, make sure to check entrance and parking costs, bus and train fares, and so on, especially in the valley; also refuel if you're going to drive and bring water, so you won't get stranded, because it is rural California after all.

Anyway folks, that's all for now. If you're in the area, check them out. If you have a story for me, or want me to interview you, or a fan group, you can always contact me at @RealFDuke.

Rolling Pone: New Pony Convention Coming to GB with Mistmane's Voice Actor
I sit down with HypnoHooves... Elley-Ray Hennessey... Details of the Con... Insight and Advice...

By Foal Duke, International Affairs Correspondent, 23rd February 2018

Hello, hello hello, what's all this then? Planning a Convention with Intent to Fun? That'll get you two years minimum, chummy. And it's been two years since BUCK closed its doors to the world, but in the style of so many European Conventions, it would appear that another convention is starting up in England with a modest venue in a reasonable location.

First -  Elley-Ray Hennessey confirmed, to me, at HW Con, that she'll be attending, but she'll also be a VIP at Gala Con 2018 too, so that's something new I don't think has been announced anywhere else yet (apart from the GC bit). But I digress - at Hearth's Warming Con a week ago, I was lucky enough to sit down with the chair of Griffish Isles, HypnoHooves, for a detailed 15 minute interview about the upcoming con. There's a video and a transcript if Youtube is deciding not to co-operate.

Website – griffishisles.uk
Duration - 1 day
Location – Manchester
Date - 19th May 2018, 10 am til late
Other plans - possible event next year too.
Charity - Greater Manchester Centre for Voluntary Organisation, gmcvo.org.uk

Foal Duke:
Do you want to tell us a bit more about yourself and how you got started?

HypnoHooves:
My name is HypnoHooves, and I'm the Chairman of Griffish Isles, the new convention that's going to be running in Manchester starting in May 2018. It's a small-ish covention to set up and, shall we say, provide something in the dead time, or the gap, between Bronyscot and UK Ponycon which run in November and October, and indeed everything else. In particular the Summer season. The earlier plan was to host a convention in the Spring slot, in a location which hopefully many of the Brony community could reach.

FD:
Okay, and how long ago did you get the idea for the convention, and how long ago did you start to set it up?

HH:
I'd had the idea for the convention for a little while, initially. Of course, I attended BUCK,* enjoyed it etcetera. But I really got the idea essentially right at the end of 2016, when BUCK was no more, at Bronyscot - which gave an example of how you could deliver something which was Brony focussed, small,  and felt to me that it was a very, very enjoyable convention. I thought, 'Could we do something like that based inside the UK?'** It was very clear that BUCK was very ambitious,*** very large, very spectacular and faced very high cost. Very high cost venues, high cost setup delivery, and [risked] overdoing things. And what I started to do was organise meets, specifically the Lancashire Brony meets, which are kinda like mini-cons, about every couple of months. So we have an event, we have themes, we have games, etc. running across particular venues. So I decided, let's form a grander sort of event - something in Manchester seemed to be the logical location for holding it. It is still technically Lancashire for all of our group, and is essentially driving distance for anybody who's potentially part of a core group. So, the Lancashire meets started attracting bronies from all over the place. It's not unusual - in fact we've never not had a meet - without someone visiting from London and from Scotland. So people travel hundreds of miles to those particular meets, and so I thought, why not scale it up and hold something in Manchester and give an opportunity to raise some money for good causes as a result?

*****The IRN-BRU Lady.

FD:
Of course - can you tell us a bit more about what plans you've got confirmed?

HH:
Certainly. The first one to announce - exclusive to you - is that we are doing buckball. We've got two venues. We've got a venue which is hosting the pony, and aiming to give a kind of UK Ponycon-like feel: a small one in a convention centre where we're going to be hosting the usual events. You've got a seating area where you can do karaoke as well, so you've got karaoke and games. You've got the auction, too, which we're going to be operating. But what we've also done is we've acquired a five-a-side football ground, which we've got the evening for. We've got marble stairs, with a balcony out over the pitches. So we're hoping to hold buckball competitions based at that event. So we thought we'd give people some physical activity - subject, of course, to the weather. If it's bad, you can always come in and have a cider at the bar.

FD:
So what other plans have you got - I noticed on the cards you were handing out they said 'Merch', and 'Partying!'. What sort of things have you got lined up for those?

HH:
We're going to have a small vendor area, but we are not going to be the same scale as UK Ponycon. We're going to limit the vendors - it'll be via application - to make sure the vendors are there, but also to make sure they can get enough revenue. That's obviously important - you can't have too many vendors. We're also going to concentrate on people doing the tuition and teaching side, so the vendors will be contacted and asked if they're willing to do a presentation, or if they're willing to donate stuff to the charity event. That's the way we're going to do it at this particular one so that hopefully there'll be some workshops for people to learn about sculpting and drawing and, hopefully, plushie making, to hold at the event.

FD:
Are there going to be any musical events (on the subject of partying)?

HH:
We've got plans for the evening. However, we've got the football club venue, and for people who know about Rock Nessie*, Rock Nessie's capacity is about 200. We're listed at about 175, so we do have a reasonable venue in the evening. We're proposing to put some music on in the evening for people as well, but we're running it all as a one-day event. So it'll all be one ticket that gets you in essentially from the morning all the way through to the evening for people who are prepared to do it. So we're trying to get a few musical talents along, and if not we'll make sure a DJ essentially is in place.  I think it would be best to say we're trying to introduce the music as a value add-in sort of thing, rather than the core event, so don't expect Summer Sun.**

*Bronyscot's Sunday night concert.
**BUCK's main Saturday night concert.

FD:
What sort of music do you think you're going to get?

FD:
That's open to question... we're looking to do mix music, but the initial proposal we've got onboard is a local DJ, who is willing to do general music earlier on but he's been taught to do some hardcore brony music as well, that we.re going to introduce later on in the evening. But that's going to be at the end of the event. Earlier on we'll have stuff that's a bit more about the show, and some stuff that will actually interest more people rather than going into heavy metal only, which I think Bronyscot and Rocknessie are famous for?* So we're trying to make it easier for people to stay to the end of the evening. Because, we're fully aware that this is a brand new convention and people aren't always going to commit to stay the night in Manchester. And the advantage of Manchester is that it's easy to get into from parts of the UK and get out from in the evening. You can get there in the morning, stay there until 8 or 9 pm, and if you prefer to leave you can pretty much reach virtually anywhere in the UK on the trains. We expect that a lot of people are going to that, so we're concentrating on that sort of assumption. But we're planning to run stuff to midnight.

[NOTE: if you are staying later, check your travel timetables. For example, last train to London is at 21:43 and after that it's a bus at 03:55 to York and then a change to train. Check out the hotels. If you're international you'll be staying overnight anyway. Many people from the Dutch, French and German communities come to Bronyscot so the staff are expecting this.]

*Actually, it's Morris Dancing. I checked.

FD:
OK. So it won't necessarily be heavy metal and sich, and more likely something a bit more easygoing?

HH:
That's the plan, but it's hard to tell, but like I said, we're open to suggestions and changes at this point. I know it's embryonic and people often say "We'll work it out!" etcetera, but we've been working it out as a series of separate events - that's how we're trying to do this - but I'm not the person who's organising the music side of things here, so I've not got all the details. We're using a couple of contacts in the brony scene - the advantage of being based in Manchester.

FD:
Have you learnt anything from BUCK before doing this? And how to do it and how not to do it?

HH:
[He thinks for a moment.]

I would say... BUCK isn't a model. BUCK is in the same league as Bronycon: a massive multi-day central event that can't be compared.

FD:
... I was thinking more in terms of things to look out for that BUCK didn't look out for, or things that were particularly good that you might want to follow as an example. But in terms of organisation, planning, setup, things like that.

HH:
I think ... I've organised events for twenty years and I've done conventions that have grown over a ten year period at this point for diverse fandoms, and computing stuff, and science fictione events. Now this is a purely charity event, it's not for profit, and - not to blow my own trumpet - but I've done quite a few of those over the years, so the general organisation to sort out everything else, we've got handled. So we'll be able to handle that one pretty well. But what I'm doing is to try and break things down to small, separate, containable events. So, the venue we've got isn't one large room, or one large engagement. We're going to be doing a presentation event (most of which is sorted, some talks are still pending...). We've got a games room with the games sorted out, which we've run through, and used what we've learned from the Lancashire meets. So people can come along and try weird pony based games that people may have never tried. I mean, pony-based Monotony - has anyone played it? the Top Trumps game? the matching gems activity game or [pony] Game of Life? The collectible card game, of course. That's all going to be self enclosed. Now the artist's activity room we've got, where people are going to be able to teaching, drawing, etcetera... karaoke room, and so on... And I suppose that'swhere we've learned from all the other ones in how we're going to be operating. So that's what we've learned from rather than trying to replicat anyone else.

FD:
Is there anything you'd say BUCK could've improved on?

HH:
BUCK was awesome. It was big, it was massive...

FD:
Yes, but purely for context, was there anything they could've improved on in terms of organising it? Did they do anything wrong?

HH:
I think it's hard to say what BUCK did wrong, because it's very easy to list what BUCK did right. It got a lot of bronies together in a central location. It managed to get people in. The early BUCKs, you know, the centre of Manchester, was probably more of an advantage than being out in Event City. That was one thing we picked up on and we had to concentrate on getting a venue within easy walking distance of Piccadilly Station. We wanted people to have public transport access, as we knew that was very important for people But it's hard to say what they didn'tget right. I think, perhaps, one lesson is that BUCK's schedule was very spread out with large gaps between things. Whereas we're having things very close together. We're trying to make it more condensed, if you like.

[NOTE: this was one observation I noticed; the main train stations - Central and Piccadilly - are quite far from Event City and you had to either get another bus or walk to the nearby hotels e.g. the Travelodge and then another to the con the next day. However, the centre of Manchester is pretty rowdy on a Saturday night, so it wasn't a bad trade-off.]

FD:
So how many people do you expect in attendance?

HH:
We don't know. It's a bit of a gamble.

FD:
How many are you planning for?

HH:
We're hoping for round about the two hundred mark, which puts us as small scale. We're certainly not going to go bust there! So we're planning around the Bronyscot size at this time. If we sell out tickets really quick, we won't expand. I need to make this very clear.  What we will do is consider it for the event in 2019.

FD:
Do you want to tell me more about the venue? Do you have a charity yet?

HH:
Our charity's going to be GMCVO, which is our venue at the St. Thomas centre, which is up on our website at this moment in time, which is the one I'm supporting, and centres around voluntary activity in Greater Manchester.

[This means things like their program to help disabled people into work, their local anti-litter efforts, etc.]

FD:
And what other venues will you be using?

HH:
We're going to be using the football pitch, the bar room and the function room at the football club that we'll be utilising. It's best described as catering for weddings and eighteen year-old birthday parties, so it's the right sort of size function for a brony convention.

[A bit like the Forum am Schlosspark venue for Gala Con, only a bit smaller. A look at the venue online seems like it'll be quite useful, and like the venue here at HW Con, pre-built for small conventions. The website said it's actually more useful for meetings and corporate functions and actually doesn't do weddings or birthday parties, but these are similar things - we know what he means.]

FD:
Do you want to tell me a little more about other things you've organised and where you are in the committee for this particular event?

HH:
I'm currently the Chair of the committee, and I'm running it, and I'm best described as roped in from the Lancashire ponies meet, and I've roped in one of our regulars from Cumbria, one of our guys from Yorkshire, who comes over regularly to the meets.

FD:
Is there not a meetup in Yorkshire?

HH:
Not to my knowledge! There's the odd one of course, who comes from Leeds, so we've got them on board.

FD:
So what does being a chair involve?

HH:
The chair involves generally sorting the entire convention out.

FD:
What sort of duties do you have on a day-to-day basis?

HH:
Everything, from the website to making sure the registration and the setting up the venue is being negotiated.

FD:
Because it's a small convention I'm guessing it's quite hands on at points?

HH:
It is. I'm doing it very hands on and getting engaged. But, I'm gonna do - I'm going to put each committee member in an established area. Nick, for example, is in charge of the karaoke. So by breaking it down into sections and avoiding each committee member having to go through committee meetings etcetera, we're able to break that down into a series of mini-meets.

FD:
That's a bit different to Bronyscot where people just pick a thing and work on it. Obviously it's not completely informal, but there's only a little bit of structured committee.

HH:
This is more like, we're giving people a piece to be in charge of, like, someone is going to be in charge of the registration desk and the function hall on the day. By doing that, it means that we have ready-made teams who can do it. It also means that as for volunteers, we're going to pair off each volunteer in a room, which means they can swap around and enjoy the convention as well, which is a big lesson some conventions might want to learn!

FD:
And they do a lot of good work as well. So why do it with that sort of setup, instead of the Bronyscot way?

HH:
I think it's because, in my experience of working on conventions elsewhere, if you try and do it with everyone involved across the whole piece you end up with people trying to take charge of large areas and large functions.

FD:
So how come that's been avoided at Bronyscot, then (as far as I know)?

HH:
Generally because of good organisation! That tends to stop people trying to take it over and take it running. I know there's been change last year, with the chair of Bronyscot, for example. But last year's and the year before's were both run very smoothly, in terms of engagement. But, I think it's more efficient if you break it down into smaller, separate areas (in terms of staff engagement with the work) and just have someone central to try and sort out the whle event. Like a series of mini events running across the whole piece.

[This is not to suggest that Bronyscot's chair changed due to this or anything else improper.]

FD:
OK. So do you want to tell us a little bit more about your social media and other things you've organised in the past?

HH:
You'll find us on www.griffishisles.uk and you'll find us on twitter and facebook with the same handles.  As for previous experience, I have organised, in particular, security conventions in the past, and a variety of them were on information security.

FD:
So you said many of these ran for a good decade and were passed on to others. Which ones in particular?

HH:
Yeah, one was DNS Con back in the nineties, and that's applicable because that did run in Manchester.

FD:
And you also organised sci-fi conventions in the past?

HH:
Yes I have!  I started several but I passed them over. I'm not allowed to talk about them actually, but if someone googles, they'll find what I'm talking about quite easily.

[We discuss this a bit further, and he says that he had contractual obligations to  not talk about it,  but that it was likely because the person he handed them over to had downloaded a standard template terms and conditions form from the web for him to sign. That's something to be wary of when working on any project - draw up an appropriate legal document!]

Author's Notes

So, yes, that's pretty much everything to be said on the con as it currently stands. I'll be releasing more on this as I get the info, and you can catch it all here at Horse News. This was originally recorded on 17th February 2018.

Rolling Pone: A Grand Day Out
Report from the First Ever Griffish Isles Pony Con, 19.05.2018

Foal Duke, International Affairs Correspondent, Manchester, 11.07.2018

It's a beautiful day in my back garden, with weeds higher than my knees and the dead sparrow really adding to the setting. The weather was just as wonderful last weekend when I was lucky enough to visit the very first pony convention in the UK* for two years - Griffish Isles, in Manchester, is just about as small as a con can get, but packs a lot of punch. Only one day long, but with two voice actor panels, a VA lesson, and some fandom history, it served as a fun lesson in maximum FUN with minimal cash, using every inch of its modest space to maximum for vendors and all your typical con sideshows. After the jump is a follow-up to the video interview with HypnoHooves, the con Chair, a few weeks back. We hope you enjoy it.

*ATTENTION: We are the SNP; we have assumed control of this article to announce that Bronyscot does not count as taking place in the so-called United Kingdom; vivat Sturgeon.

The Facts and Figures
The Convention itself took place at the St. Thomas Hall in North Arwick, just down the road from Piccadilly Station, about fifteen minutes easy walking distance from both there and Oxford Station; the venue is a church, home to the Greater Manchester Voluntary Centre Organisation, who deal in assisting charity and third-sector organisations in the area with networking, raising awareness, and recruitment - a small con with a modest venue won't raise too much in cash, but for a small charity like this, it's a lot. HH, busy like any good con chair, informed me the paying attendees totalled ~120, and there were 40 or so volunteers, vendors, musicians and so on. Venue's total capacity is 185, so not bad at all! This increased by 20 or so at the Power League bar later on, and the silent auction in the Centre raised £745, while the secondary auction at the bar raised another £650. The exact figures have not been calculated at this time.
Oh yes... I forgot to mention that the Con actually took place over twovenues; the Centre in the day and the Power League five-a-side football bar just down the road in the evening. The venue is pretty nice but no elevator. More on that later.
The Con chair, HypnoHooves, has been involved in many GB-based conventions in the past, as we saw in the Rolling Pone intro video a few weeks back. The staff include him and Becca from the Lancashire meets, and Matt from the London group. People have come from quite far for these, including Scotland, the Netherlands and even as far as Czechia (Hi Flutterguy!). Noteable highlights at this con included two VIP guests - Lee Tockar and Elley-Ray Hennessey - and several music acts on the fan circuit including Coltastrophe.

Arriving
So after a long train ride, I arrived at Manchester Piccadilly Station, and after a twenty-minute walk to the nicer part of the town centre, past the myriad buskers and street performers, I came to the St Thomas Centre. In all honestly, the venue is a bit hard to find from North Ardwick Green; the Centre has a sign, but the actual front door is around the back on the street behind it, down a really bumpy alleyway. This is mentioned to avoid any issues with Google Maps. Now, the venue itself, with the big tiled yard visible from N Ardwick Green, is full of weeds and the like. I honestly thought the con wasn't going ahead. I feared there was a bit of a Dashcon going on here... I checked with the venue staff and they told me it was still on. And sure enough, on Friday, the staff had all arrived and set up, with a large queue of people. Fortunately, unlike a lot of cons, the venue has public wifi, and it's good! Old building though, so a couple of steps and no ramp.
As I came in I spotted a couple of friends of mine, who for anonymity's sake I'll refer to as Errol and Smaug (both like dragons). Errol had only booked his hotel on Wednesday and fwas curious. As we went inside, most of the people were already seated (it was around 09:45) and Becca processed our tickets etc. The desk had free blindbag toys and Vimto sweets. There's a real sense of good-natured friendliness that you get at the smaller cons, and it didn't get much realer than this.
From the floor plan to the left, as you can see. most of the people in the con were sitting and ready for the opening ceremony, but a few were already milling around the vendor tables in the main hall, lining the walls, and even a Guitar Hero right there next to Manic Sculptor's table! When there's little space, you get crafty, and then you get other ideas; not only could some of the vendors sit and watch the proceedings, but everyone saw the vendors! The dealer's dens to the right had wide doors that allowed you to see in as you entered the main hall. Errol and Blaze were already getting stuck in. The main hall was already playing PMVs and fan animations, and there were the usual technical difficulties that saw the intro start a few minutes late, but things ran smoothly, and soon HH was out on the podium introducing us to Bobby, the griffin mascot of the Con and the usual health and safety rules etc. Quite informal. Despite the multiple noise sources, the vendors were able to hear the customers perfectly fine (I asked a few) and I could hear the speakers perfectly fine.
We were then introduced to Elley-Ray Hennessey, a veteran voice actor of thirty years and the voice of Mistmane from Season 7 as well as other roles. Interestingly enough, she was introduced to the show by Tabitha St. Germain, who is her close personal friend in real life. The first item on the agenda was her voice actor panel, leading in quite nicely.

11:00 - Elley-Ray Hennessey's Q&A Panel
How it feels to suddenly encounter a well-established fandom... Veteran insight and advice...

So this panel was something quite unique; you have a veteran voice actor, with a good few friends of similar experience involved in a well-known online fanbase, who has only just heard of it. This allows us a unique perspective on the experience of a newcomer suddenly finding themselves knee-deep in nerds, and sets us up well for the contrast with Lee Tockar, who was there right from the start and had the opportunity to watch it grow.
The panel started with a staff member, no doubt feeling pretty lucky, asking questions as you'd expect, followed by an audience session. The questions were generally typical of so many other VA panels, but a few stood out to me as being particularly well thought, and some of the answers Elley gave were quite striking. She knows how to stir your emotions, and this is part of what makes her such an excellent voice actor, as we'd see later on.
Elley was full of vigor that morning, and highly engaging. While it was a good six months ago now, keen eyes will recall that Mistmane is introduced by Rarity; Elley revealed that she actually was first recommended for the role - and introduced to the fandom - by Tabitha St. Germain, who is a close friend of hers.
She then gave the audience a few pointers on where to start with voice acting and how to use your emotions and your interpretation of the 'hero' to focus and define your skills, and she would expand upon this later on.

12:00 - Freaks, Geeks or Heroes?
This panel was a bit different; you don't often get examinations of the fandom in this fashion; the talk, given by Dr Andrew Crome of Manchester University, gave a frank and unabashed look at certain parts of the fandom people might rather forget.
The discussion started with a look at fanbases in general and how much of a challenge it genuinely is for female-centred pop culture to generate fanbases that are not too commercialised, dumbed-down or stereotypical, and how this ends up with so many fan bases being so male-centric. Because a lot of guys tend to go for action and adventure-oriented entertainment, they are less fussy about things being a bit dumber or simpler, and with media execs looking to save money and time constantly, simpler plots and characters are tempting to them. Plus, their habits of believing that male stereotypes about this are true they are more than happy to supply media that appeals to it, helping to fuel it. This also has an impact on shows for -women, and (more importantly) little girls, helping to pander to stereotypes according to both genders.

The general incredulity of the press and other outside observers to fanbases, seen as 'nerdy', goes up a notch with a something aime at little kids, another when across genders, and another with something as stereotypically cutesy and dumbed down as pony was (or is believed to be to those in the Press not acquainted with Generation 4). It is sensational enough that the tabloids don't need much effort (not that it stops them) and the more sensible press are swept up in this a little (all journalists socialise with each other, and the tabloid reporters get talking to the broadsheeters over cocktails in swanky Soho bars, so they come around to their way of thinking a bit).
The usual questions get asked about why, focussed on the weirdness of it all (if you're a real journalist, you should have enough real world experience to not let this faze you) and about the sexuality of the collector or fan. Now, if you ask me, that sort of fascination is pretty odd. Even those within similar media circles find it highly strange - not intriguing, but strange, alien even! - and one quote that stands out from the presentation is "otherwise rational high schoolers and college-age young ladies... with My Little Pony toys by the gross tucked away" by Hal Erickson in his Encyclopedia of Television Cartoons (1995). A cartoon historian of all people, which is nerdity on top of nerdity, finds it a bit bizarre. Clearly, part of the reasons these stereotypes exist, being fuelled by the media belief in them (and exgaggeration either deliberately by tabloid writers or simply by their typically melodramatic tendencies) is down to a lack of self-awareness of the same sort of behaviour themselves. Just look at any tabloid fawning over the Royals to the extent they write whole columns asking 'what if the Archbishop drops the rings???' whilst calling us weird. And their readers ape it. Props if it's a US tabloid with a readerbase that call themselves republicans.
Then comes the 'positive' sensationalising about how we are 'rebels', 'redefining American manhood' and so on. The problem this causes, as the discussion leads into, is the marginalisation of female and young fans (little boys liking My Little Pony is not that weird, as kids will watch anything) - or rather, furthermarginalisation: our very presence might make it seem a bit odd to parents with young kids and the media only serve to make it seem worse! This is especially bad when fans are made out to be 'weirdoes' in a poorly defined way, and of course the possibility of predatory behaviour comes up in discussion too; this boosts the fear and loathing a bit further, but also makes it seem like a safe space to would-be predators that read about it. This is why reporting has to be sensible and balanced. Interestingly, nobody seems to get wind of the one real (and harmless) perversion that is true - the cartoon pony fetish, of course. I mean, you'd think that would be something to cause a moral panic over.

The final segment discussed the idea of the fans as perceived by the show staff, and how the fan's actions can affect this. We looked at the discussion of fans trying to backseat drive as per Stranger than Fanfiction, the episode with the Daring Do Convention and RD's squabbles with a fellow fan, and how fans can still, you know, be niceto each other. Then we moved onto Once Upon a Zeppelin and the problems with fame and how people can be a bit too overbearing to their idols. The best part was saved for last: Fame and Misfortune! Further backseat driving, how fans seem to think they know better sometimes, and how they portray themselves to the creators vs how this affects them. Of course, I get the feeling that sometimes creators forget that portraying the fans in a certain light will, itself, give certain reaction, and might not do enough to prepare themselves for criticism ('snowflake' tendencies) for the inevitable outright bollocking from some of the fandom's nastier, gobbier quarters. Unlike a lot of the people that use the s-word, I don't feel that it justifies that sort of vile comment. I am of the opinion that they should, if possible, put up with the ruder ones and calmly answer their questions - after all, it is just random words on a screen and can't harm you; but, nobody said they had to just sit there and like it; being insulted like that stings a lot. So they should maybe take the piss a bit. Say, pointing out the hypocrisy of the person calling the artist a snowflake etc. and throwing a tantrum about a kids cartoon in the same (tweeted) sentence.

I had a rather interesting discussion about this with Dr. Crome with that in mind; MA Larson, of course, will always use a bit of humour if confronted on Twitter with moaning manchildren (here defined as people that act childishly over a cartoon they are a fan of, despite being an adult), and the moral for this episode was sound, even if the criticisms seemed to generalise the whole fanbase... so why didn't Larson defend it? Why did he distance himself from it? It's possible it was heavily altered behind his back, but by who and why? He was the chief writer at the time, so how would this get past him without him greenlighting or at least havig a hand in the production? Was he telling the truth or not?Dr. Crome was not too sure himself. I asked Mr. Larson on Twitter, and no response. Make of that what you will.
For disclosure purposes, I liked that episode and thought it was true, although it made out the problem to involve more people than is really true; in the fandom, such gibbons are a minority.

13:00 - The Cosplay Competition
Ah, yes, the cosplay... so many fine costumes on display... so many bloody furries, sweltering in the heat... all lined up at the back of the hall trying not to snag/scratch/stab each other with their horns/claws/swords. A good thirty or so people took part - a good quarter of the attendees! This is typical for small cons under 300 people. The costumes were varied and interesting, with a lot of good entries displaying a lot of effort. The Sphinx fursuiter got lots of appreciation and, unsurprisingly, so did the Tempest fursuiter, even a round of applause.

13:30 - Introduction to Fursuiting
Sadly, due to sudden hunger pangs (eat breakfast!) I was unable to capture this interesting panel by the veteran fursuiter Phil Sims giving you the whys, hows, and wherefore art thous of starting a fursuit crafting hobby and business. If anyone has a link to a video of it at all, even partly, let me know.

Travel, Accommodation and Other Advice
Most of the people at this Con, as with Bronyscot, came from Europe, especially the vendors; if you're coming in from Europe, book a cheap flight (that is, book it early) and try to look for cheap hotels; Ibis are now in business on this side of the channel, but make sure to look for Ibis BUDGET. There is one about fifteen minutes from the con on foot, but at late night when you're drunk, on a Saturday in wot-you-lookin-at-MANCHESTER, you might want to get a cab for about £10; Uber hasn't lost its licence for gropings as it has in London, so bear that in mind. There is a regular Ibis on the crossroads of Princess and Portland St., but avoid this as it is exactly the same as a Budget. The Budget is where all the fans were staying. The Con staff reccommended this one. ALWAYS check out a convention's soclal media, because you might find an unofficial Telegram or Whatsapp group chat where everyone is co-ordinating. Travelodge is alright.
Note that the best place to go is directly to Manchester airport by air and take the train or tram to wherever you're staying.
If you're coming from Glasgow or Edinburgh you can get a train directly to Manchester. If you live in the South of England, good luck to you. The best route by train is to London Euston and then from there to Manchester. Virgin trains are alright, but the food is a bit pricey. just be wary of yet another strike from train staff and/or lots of cancellations or sudden major timetable changes. Also replacement buses. Bear in mind the East Coast Mainline will be re-nationalised soon, and if there's any justice, Richard Branson will be flung off Beachy Head.
If you're coming in from Europe, especially if you're a vendor or musician, I suggest KLM or Virgin; excellent baggage allowances and direct flights. If you're coming in from America, try and do this as part of a touring holiday to see friends and/or a couple of cons or meetups on the mainland over a couple of weeks as it makes the con worth the money. If you're an American vendor, then the con is definitely worthwhile as a one day thing as part of a vacation because you can make a decent amount of cash; Igor of MLP Ties (interview soon) is able to make it to the Netherlands for Hearthwarming Con. Virgin Atlantic are good for you as vendors or musicians, albeit a bit expensive. Research a print shop near the con for your art, arrange a session via email in advance, print it there the day before the con and ship all your other crafts as fragile. Of course, check and double check with con staff as to what expenses they cover; or what riders (incentives or bonuses) you get.
If you find anything else a bit better, DM me at @RealFDuke.

This obviously applies to all North Americans attending all European Cons.
Travel in groups, especially if in costume, only go into pubs and bars with costume if you can't avoid it, and keep your wits about you. Manchester is friendly enough, but on a Saturday night it can be quite rough. At BUCK 2013 some random bastard tried to slam curry in my face and in 2014 someone tried to steal my hat; he regretted it soon after, as he saw the wizard staff on my belt - cosplay as something that lets you "have a good reason" under the law for carrying a blunt implement, e.g. an engineer or a wizard just in case. Note that this is not guaranteed to persuade the police in the unlikely event they stop and search you so take this advice with caution and any legal repercussions are your own responsibility, nobody else's. Try to avoid going around town in cosplay if you can avoid it. Plan ahead. Be cool and casual.

Food, Drink, Shopping
The Arndale Centre is the major mall in the centre of Manchester, near Piccadilly Station, is good for all your shopping needs; if you're a vendor and need some extra supplies urgently, they have a WHSmith for basic stuff, and for more involved e.g. Hossdick, er, Bostick glue, craft paper and so on, you can try the Ryman. Argos is your best bet for electronics, especially extra power cables for your tablet, power packs, adapter plugs, or mobile wifi hotspots if your mobile contract doesn't get coverage in Britain. Maplin's are expensive, but as they're going out of business everything's on sale. If you want to buy some plastic cartoon horses, Smyth's Toys are a good bet. There are also a couple of good costume shops, some of which do repairs and adjustments. Wilko are good for any miscellaneous things you might need. Think about what day you want to arrive, get there a day before, and run around for anything you might need.
If you're after a quick bite to eat, you can try Boots pharmacy for £3.49 meal deals or a Tesco's or Sainsbury's for similar things. Obviously you can get a curry or some other takeaway-type-thing from thekebab houses nearby (generally halal too) or the Esso accross the road. Use Just Eat if you want to order. The supermarkets also sell booze. You might also have heard of Greggs. Avoid them. These are a chain of bakeries; good for pastries and doughnuts, but pretty crap for hot food, including the perennial English fave, the sausage roll. Seriously, they cook them well, but they aren't allowed to keep them reheated, so you'll always get a cold pasty, hot pocket or burrito, and you have to pay extra to eat inside, even if there's no seats and it's raining. See, reheating them would require 20% VAT, not 17.5%, thanks to that stingy bastard George Osborne, who used to be Chancellor, and now runs the Evening Standard, and now you know what's wrong with the press.
Wetherspoons are the big chain pub in the GB and they are generally satisfactory, with decent pints for decent prices and somewhat eager to inform you of local history. 3 plates for £10 is a must as far as food goes. Only downsides are dingy lights and a few scruffy old gits, but people generally keep themselves to themselves as they all look like extras from Thriller so you lot should fit right in.
Usually at most one-day cons they meet up for a pub meet on the night before but this wasn't the case; always check their facebook or if all else fails, email the staff!

Con-Specific Highlights
In between panels I wandered around, looking at everything, as you tend to do, and I scored a brief advice spot on the art of vending with Greenfly, who was a little out of the way in one of the vendor rooms (see the map). The Not the Toilet Roll Game was amusing: buy an item from a vendor of £5, stick in the pot luck pile with the rest, get assigned to a pony team (Earth, Pegasus, or Unicorn) and draw names from a hat; if the name you draw matches yours, miss a turn, but if not then you swap your gift with someone from another team - who will end up with the bog roll / bum wad / shit tickets by the end and become Billy the Skid? Cack Halliday? Wipe Earp?
The Buckball was also interesting; you may remember in the intro interview a few weeks back, this was discussed. Again, pretty fun, it actually emulates the pony version pretty well (and it needs less paraphernalia than quidditch; try getting a broomstick on the Jubilee Line).
Of course, the usual con hits were there - My Little Karaoke, collectible card game (with a tutorial panel!), and gem shuffle game. However, they were soon abandoned by the few people in them (be fair, this is their first year) to see what was, in my opinion, the highlight of the day...

14:30 - Voice Workshop with Elley Ray-Hennessey
Now this, this was one of the big highlights of the day.
Elley is not only a veteran voice actor, but also an eager teacher of new, budding mic maestroes and she offers a service that is not only professional but also very engaging and fun. How do I know? Because she was kind enough to give us a free lesson!
Starting off slowly and building up, she was very, very good at stirring the emotions of the audience, who were sitting in rapt attention, until they were very eager to participate and responded to every question and statement she threw out there. The seating was nearly full, and hardly anyone was elsewhere, and perhaps only one or two quitely milling around the vendor hall, but even that had mostly stopped.
Firstly, she started out by explaining that her style of voice acting uses the chakras found in Hinduism as convenient reference points for what muscles to train, and in turn what sort of voices you use these for. They consist of the stomach chakra, chest chakra and various others such as the nose and throat, which you can then compress for (respectively) an angry villain role's voice, a fearful voice (often in conjunction with the stomach), a nervous nasal voice, or something light and jolly or even annoying and wheedling, like Trump when he's playing the wounded-kitten-victim act like all schoolyard bullies.
This might sound like mystical new-age nonsense, but it's not; it is a metaphor, and a very neat one. Joy voices require a clenched stomach and a lot of breathing to give the inflections, but angry voices and fearful ones don't tend to have that sort of breathing. Of course, this can vary, and there are no hard and fast rules, and my coverage here can not do it justice really, so I'll be giving you a full vid soon. No hard and fast rules, except one.
And that rule is: to get started as a voice actor, you need to visualise those you look up to, or your ideal 'hero' and try to bring that sort of personality and demeanor to your roles through your voice, by expressing your joy, expressing your love for others - which is love, anger and fear together - and being willing to risk things in expressing them.
But, to be a great voice actor, you have to learn to make it part of you as a person, not just your roles - living in joy, that is, looking for the positives or things you can make positive, and being willing to express these things out of love, by teling those around you your joy, anger or fear to help them understand things for their own good, and being willing to express them unconditionally and bugger what people think of you.

15:30 - Voice Acting Panel with Lee Tockar
And now we came to the other main event of the day; Lee Tockar, the voice of many fan favorites including Steven Magnets (the very first!) and Snips (the very Trixiest), sat down with us in the main hall for a Skype question/answer session whilst over in St. Louis. The panel particularly interested this reporter because Lee doesn't do that many interviews, even though the show's other supporting character actors have a similar workload of background and one-shot roles. Furthermore, because he was there from the start, he's had time to watch the fanbase emerge, grow and shape the show by showing their rabidwholehearted lustsupport for their bewilderingfavorite husbandos1characters that inevitably made their way into the show; this makes him very experienced with us and there's a real rapport with him and his audience, and very smooth. This is in contrast to Ellie, who is still quite new to us and therefore more excited and emotive as this fandom has come as a bit of a surprise - bear in mind that she's been in the voice acting trade a good deal longer than Lee, so that should emphasis how unique this whole fandom of ours is. Both their styles of speaking serve to engage the audience well, however.
One interesting thing he revealed were his influences, which are quite varied: Frank Oz, Frank Welker and Mel Blanc. If you actually listen to his voices, you can genuinely hear them. Snips, for example, contains traces of Frank Oz - the little bugger sounds a bit husky and muppety, and this fits in with his character as an annoying, hairy, but utlimately well meaning little maniac (your typical real life miniature pony). I am so drunk right now. I want my waifu.2Mel Blanc appears to come out a bit in Steven Magnets with a sort of lilting, effete voice, and Coriander Cumin I could murder a curry3has a bit of Frank Welker too.
On the subject of foreign voices, Lee remarked that he finds these to be the most challenging; see, it's about being able to do them well enough to avoid being disrespectful (usually by being stereotypical) and balancing this against the need for something slightly over the top or cartoony without it getting too silly and becoming stereotypical that way. Of course, in England it's hard to do as everyone has a cartoon accent to begin with.4 Dick Van Dyke is the exception; that awful Cockney accent isn't an accent; it's a phenomenon.

16:30 - The Awards Ceremony
10Let me out of here. I can barely fit in this cell as it is, never mind with her ego squashing me up against the wall. Oh, oh come on, don't be like that. Capper you bastard let me out right now. She's starting to get violent, oh God oh God, let me out before I suffoHI all, it's Capper here. We've had to put him away for a bit until he calms down. He's starting to run out of air though, because KP started to talk about herself.
Anyway, where were we...?
Ah, yes. Despite the fun and games, everything had to come to a close eventually, and thus, we ended with the award ceremony. A wide variety of prizes were given for the cosplay competition and the other competitions, and the clear winner was the Tempest fursuiter from earlier, though other awards were given for effort and orginality, including one guy who cosplayed as Derpy cosplaying as the manticore. Flutterguy didn't win anything, sadly. There were a couple of bids left on the silent auction to give to their owners, but that was it. HH thanked everyone for attending and told them to look forward to next year, and then people slowly left. A quick chat with Elley, and she said she liked these smaller conventions because it's easier to interact with the fans and there are less minders keeping an eye on you; it certainly summed up the con's laid back but very professional atmosphere.
However, even with the vendors packing up and your dirty bastard reporter volunteering his services as a human crane, the day was only half over, and the evening was coming!

Note: this is what I have been able to garnish from Prof. Duke's drunken, garbled screams.

17:30 - The Power League Bar and Concert
A short walk away from the St Thomas Centre, and we were at the Power League. A nice venue, this was the home of the Power League five-a-side football, which is like regular football but with only half the number of pansies. Sadly, not many people took the Buckball up; give it a chance! The venue itself was spacious and with decent layout; you could use the booth tables at the back to play the now mandatory Cards Against Humanity session and see the bands up front, as was the case with Errol, Smaug and the Prof.
As the silent auction went underway... what the hellis that banging? What's that?11Oh, you are, are you?12Oh, you have, have you?13Right then... alright, alright, stand back, coming in... wait, where are you... how'd you open the door?14You bastard! Let me out...
Okay, everybody, sorry about that. Normal service has now been resumed. The evening's entertainment was incredibly fun. A little more low key than I would've thought, but still great all the same. There was a decent array of snacks and beer, though Beck's and Stella are a bit same-y, and I prefer the ciders (which were only cheap-o Strongbow or Stella Raspberry) but that's a typical Inglerlish Pub Like. The only real drawback was no food.
We ambled drunkenly down the road to the local curry house for dinner, which the staff at PL kindly let us take inside. As we walked back, Errol remarked that he came not just because of his intrigue, but also the atmosphere of small cons. Smaug felt a real closeness with everyone there, as if it was more homely; and really, I agree with them - I find these small cons, especially the single-day ones, have everyone sitting around and talking in a nice, laid back setting, even the guests of honor, and there's not a mass of people crowding them, so they have a very homely, friendly feel to them. Don't you?
Make sure you get to them. Whilst they're around.
The pub quiz came next, with the prize being free con swag with added bragging rights. We were subjected to all manner of difficult. strange and ultimately amusing questions that tested fan knowlesge and sorted the wizards from filthy casuals. We then had another auction to sell off - in the finest of con traditions - all the con badges, banners and other paraphernalia and heraldry, and some people were able to pick up their bids from the silent auction. Take, for example, this very cute little Flutterdash wedding sculpture from Manic Sculptor.

The ConcertWhile the entertainment was a little more low-key than I preferred - I had expected a small rock and metal concert like Rock Nessie at Bronyscot, but got more of a house-band type experience from the lads, who appeared at both - it was still full of atmosphere and life, if a little bit less suited for dancing. Not that it stopped people - Duke and Dame Flutterguy, I'm looking at you here.

Cracking Lazer and Steely Hooves were absolutely fantastic, and we were treated to some old fan classics from the earshredding Spitfire by Lazer to the sombre and somewhat moving Little White Horse by Steely. This song is pretty poignant for the fact it's all about Britty, the mascot for BUCK, and a perfect way to round off his set; to dwell on the memories of fandom days past, of conventions come and gone, of bright flashing lights and of friendships forged in the noise and heat of head-pounding raves with a guy in a Lyra costume, and drunkenly singing Anthropology on My Little Karaoke with this random guy in the heady atmosphere of lunchtime beers and the buzz of happiness and bonhomie knowing that him and his friends in their online club will soon be friends with you for life, and that you all can and will travel any distance to meet whenever and wherever for drinks and antics on a sleepy summer afternoon in beautiful surroundings, and of knowing that thanks to that little white horse you are doing this - all this - withsome of the most unique, most creative, most kind and all round best bloody people in the world. And it didn't even go when Coltastrophe ripped it up with some excellent rock covers. And it didn't even go when the DJ came on for jams later on, with a wide variety of old and new pony-themed headbangers to dance like a madman to later on. And it didn't even go when HypnoHooves and his professional, swift and dilligent staff, who had run this convention with the doting precision and care that you would expect of them and their past folio, put this little griffin chick of theirs gently to bed and ushered us all out into the night - where we knew we would see it again next year. Because we knew that, although the roads were winding, and there were many things that I would like to say to you about it, I could only sum it up as this: Manchester had a convention again, and it looks set to grow, and more people will come, brought by past memories and eager to make new ones. Because we expect to see those memories again, old and new, comfortingly familiar and yet still refreshingly surprising; of a floor full of people jumping around in which I see Mr and Mrs Flutterguy dancing in the middle of it in a fast waltz, of all things, without a care in the world, like living symbols of our fandom, at yet another convention, yet still wandering how they managed it; of Pony's new voice star Elley-Ray enthralling and being enthralled by all the people as she sat amongst them and discovered their stories, told them how to use their voices to spin stories of their own, like Lee Tockar used to do back in 2011; of friendships and romances, of Peter and Amy New... Like I said, the best people in the world. Because while you might think there's no point - to which I disagree - I thoroughly recommend you make the effort to go while there's still time, and if you think there is little time left - again, I disagree - then that's all the more reason to go. Because, as Pratchett said, it might not last forever... But then again, what does? The memories, that's what.--Foal Duke, International Affairs Correspondent, Manchester, 19th May 2018--Contact at @RealFDuke if you have a story. DM me in confidence.--Special thanks to HypnoHooves, Becca and all the staff, and Smaug for watching my camera.

It wouldn't be the first time, and it probably won't be the last, but a public notice of a planned "orgy" at 2018's BronyCon was announced on FimFiction by user PsyKey. The announcement, which goes into highly-specific detail, including the date, time, and venue of the orgy, as well as what to bring, was deleted some time later after receiving attention from the community at large, so it is unclear if the brony sex party is still going forward as advertised. Below, we have copy-pasted the contents of the announcement, in the event you are planning your own orgy and don't want to have it at the same time.

At the time of posting, we had joined in the Orgy Planning Discord Server and learned that the venue is being changed, so you will need to stay in the loop to know where the event will be held.
